The whole department presented a good appearanee, and we under stand. the inspection was, in the main; faludactnry, though there scorn- « d to im too tnneh attention bestow ed on tho showy parts <)f tho {Engines sit the expense of tho unseen and more important part*. • ItV A«r*s* the** rows, lit Mitral field, nn ox leein was diiilribuilng a line of s«ckii liUed with the prepartd faVlilixers.— Next Came eight of the Dow Law cuttou plan ters* .ami Unano Distributors, so guaged is to distribute the desired nimutily to the acre. These distributors deposit the prepnr.iliou st the bottom of the deep furrow made by the double teams, being .sap piled ns they passed tho lino of sacks by hands standing ready for Ibat purpose. Seat followed the bedding force—ihirhj- t'cu line, fat f*st walking tuuU>*, pulling fVir/y*firo *f the Wat I plows. With these four furrows aro thrown to the enriched fur* row, raising a tint smooth mellow bed, and louring in the middle a small ridge. The ground Is now ready for the whii'li are deposited in the bed directly ever the fertilizer, with the sttino planter that de posited tho guano, and covered with a light harrow with one tooth on auoh aide. The seed thus planted come tip in a line ns straight as an iron rail, tangent, scarce ly as hr oa(1 as the tap of a rail, and a tit tie indented from tho surface oulddo the harrow furrows. The next protess is tho splittiug of the ridgo in the middle of the row, which Is done with a shovel just largo enough to throw tho soil to tho opposit top of tho furrows on each side of it. This ends the p/wiriwy, and tbeliard work is over with . As soou as the oottou is largo enough the whole force is supplied with light lit! inch sweeps, which aro run twice lo the row, and just far enough from the oottou tq lap one or two inches in the centre. These sweeps merely skim tho surface, never being permit ted to sink lo a greater depth than j an iuuh, and they throw only dirt enough to tho cot ton to till the indenture made by tho I'lanter and the covering harrows, while they droop to the centre of tho row and till the middle furrow. This leaves a low, slightly om ved bed—tho cotton being on the highest line. • The entire crop being thus gouo through lib, the sweeps are laid aside, the ’unites are turned in the lot to rest nnd'fooupcrate. and nil bands aro mustered for the chopping process. When tho chopping and weeding to a stand is eomploUd, the hoes are laid aside no more to be used, and the sweeps arc used only to keep the grass down by jmrfn plowing. Thus it will be seen that the main wmk tor tho crop is ill the preparation of the land, and the planting ; nnd that nil Httbsequeni work Is above the roots of the plant, and so light that laborers and mules frolic nnd fatten through the semmor. lu our next we shall give an account ol Col Lockett's preparation of fertiliser*, am his mode of ilaming nnd cultivating corn j and follow with the kind of implement* he uses, bis liitiug system, discipline, general management and results.
