Gallantry and Presknce of Mind.—Our
traveling agent reports to us a very interest
ing incident that happened on the up freight
train on the Macon and Western Railroad
yesterday near Griffin.
A little child got on the track, and igno
rant of danger, it remained unmov 1 direct
ly iu from of the approaching train. The
/•nginecr Mew the whistle, but its ehrill
■’cream of admonition was uuheeded by the
little Innocent. The mother flew to its res
cue, On thundered (he crashing locomotive,
unable to check up its terrible momentum.—
The mother, with outstretched arms and ag
ony of terror, sped for the little one, when
just as ahe nearly reached it, her foot slipped
and she fell back into the ditch.
The little ono still sat unierrified. The
nruel wheels rushed remorselessly on. The
hot hreath of tho iron monster lapped the
victim. The screaming cry of the steam
seemed but to amuse, instead of portending
to the chil-1 the mangled death that awaited
it.
Just then, when the Moody doom was al
most certain, Robert Richardson, fireman,
dashed out on the engine, and with inimita-
.hie presence,of mind and heroio aelf-nosses*
sion, cahgbt up the lofont, and held It safe
in his arras, rescjiied from a horrible death.

It is true the warrants speak of them
as “claiming” seats in the Forty-first

been llie smallest doubt about the ul
