In our issue of yesterday we briefly adverted to the different proposi" lions which had been made, on each side, by the contestants in the rail road imbroglio. The very frank and unreserved oiler of the South Caroli na Railroad, in which the claims of that corporation against tho city were proposed to bo surrendered, as an ev idence of its desire to prese'rve the former alliance of Augusta With that road and with Charleston, was, some what to our surprise, immediately re jected. Tho failure to harmonize on this proposal, induced the fear that litigaliou on a wider hcaIu would fol low, cuoplcd with general detriment to railroad interests West of Augus ta, in tho stoppage of tluough freight and passenger trains. During yesterday, however, through the exer tions of our public spirited townsman, Alderman Moyer, tho negotiations- thus seemingly At an end were renew ed, and, we are ploased to record, not without encouraging result. At a late hour in the * afternoon, President Magrath, in behalf ot the South Carolina Railroad, assented to a cartel submitted to him, by which tho wholo controversy on both sides tho river is practically closed. This involves the payment of 175,000 in bonds bv the Columbia and- Augusta Railroad Company. Some details, of secondary importance, aro to bo ais M cussed and conoluded upon this morn- ing—principally as to precautions and safeguards in the joint use pt tho Washington street track, to provido against future disagreements, and all to end, \Vo hope in lasting peace. In this controversy, the South Car olina Railroad seems to have been guided by an earnest desire to avoid collision with the city authorities of Augusta, and has pursued a course which has resulted in saving other roads in connection from dimctilties and losses which protruded liliuti•• o ' in maintaining wlut it conceived to be its rights and privileges, would h:iv<* entailed. In previous unioles we Imv.' tried to point out tho loot that more than a lew of the representative men of the North were silently but assuredly awakening to tho truth of the position whioh The Imperialist so boldly assumes, and it is our belief that the stronger and elcarer minds among our Southern fellow-citizens are not wanting in a similar percep tion. Wo have therefore selected General Lee as a name xufiloiently pramineut to point our moral. From the day when lie surrendered to Uen. Grant and accepted the fail„ ure of the political enterprise for whieli he had sacrificed so much, his position ha, been one of silent and dignified ac quiescence ill the results ol tho war • but it is not to be gathered from this that ho tails to comprehend those re sults in all their length and breadth. It may rather bj believed he clearly perceives the drill, of public nlfuire ami IS coutented, like thousands of others ol our best and wisest, to wait in peaceful patience for tho inevitable development ot the future. Conscious that the old Kcpiihlio has oeased to exist, the sagacious leader sees no reason lor trying to persuade himsell that tho country can continue forever in its present transition state, hut calniy waits for the future in the attitude of a man who will assiimo no responsibility for that which ho can not prevent. And in nil this General Leo and thoso who imitate him, aro acting well and wisely. Their course can give no offenoc to any, while it tends to allay those partisan prejudi- oes which, if fostered by the jealous watehlulness which their too speedy return to pnblio life would cause, might hercallcr interfere with their patriotie usefulness in the better days to come. Still, in pondering the great events in whioh they have been partakers, such men must at times be struck with the vast difference between that whieli they attempted arid that winch Ue y accomplished ; tliuv attempted simply lo divide the Ojnoe, ami il,.. v determined the fact toai a ltepui.li- was no longer pnssibie in rt: teu.ij longer l. - „, ruad be : mist it niii n, ip. , . uahled i i in' omiiplexiua hvvuaiss ** a‘-•‘I'l o» greenish cssi .u'om me lace.
