After mting, cooling off, refreshing and i8 #f l W°ta tffy poupd wstermcloa oftho cc-i-ind variotyV'wc were invi ed to look at the Captain's melon patch, and -.such a sight! About one aoro and a halfwit - laterally cov ered with melons. W,e art uot above tho mark when wc say that there were five hun dred rlpo melons on tho vines, weighing from thirty to fifty pounds, and four times that many green oucb. Wo uevor beforo saw such a melon patch, or finer melons. It is tbo Captain's own patch, and though ho has nearly three hundred colored people on the place ho has never missed a melon. Hogivos his hands as many as they want, treats then* generally so kindly, and manages them so ntelligently, that they scrupulously protect his property as well as tho property of Messrs. Jordou & Lockett, and aro ever roady to servo him and them. We next examined ‘‘the patch”—six acros of cotton of the Allen variety, a seed select ed by C'apt. Alien, and brought by him from Hancock county. This cotton was planted the 27th day of April, is about shoulder high, and is richly fruited from the ground to the top. It suffered severely from the cotton lice, and is nota9 good as it would have bcon but for that. Wo predict thaVthc six acres will yiold 18000 pounds of seed cotton. We saw but one ol Col. Lockett's fields—a beautifhl field, containing 250 acres—and that only from the road. Tliosizeof the cot ton nnd its fruitage satisfied us that his sys tom of culture is oorrect, end that tho fertil isers he uses ate of inestimable value ia tho production of «olion< The usual couitcsies again iudulged, wc mounted and wheeled away aiull^, or two Maj. Mr. D. F. Jaokson,.thepolite geullemun, in telligent planter and efficient manager, re ceived us hospitably. A goodly number of neighboring planters, tlicit wives mid ilmfgh- lers, nnd a squad of Albanians of both sexes had already assembled, and all were enjoy ing themselves iu the most approved stylo of country comfort. Tit it l’jtiuiluM Patch. A look at the crop was the first par/ uf the programme, ami the “pitiaiun» patch” being nearest tho house, while our hoisea were being harnessed mid saddled, we walked through three acres of the Dixon variety. It was planted, we believe, with a view of con testing for a premium at the Macon Fair.— It is second year's ground, the rows are live feel apart, and there are about 10 000 stalks lo the acre. It was richly fertilized, has boon thoroughly cultivated, uud is now live fcctliigh. The fruitupou it is us thick as the foliage, and all pronounced it the best cotton they had ever seen. It was planted the 28th day of April, uud the fruit already unou it, in our judgiuuut, is sufficient to yield a bale of 500pounds to the acre. . It is, at this time, ahead of C'upt, Allen’s patch, though the Captain will wager watermelons Unit lie beats the Mujor. We expect to quafl the health of both gentlemen from premium goblets. Thk Main Crop. We noxt rode over the pluntAtion and fuuud corn and cotton iu a splendid condi tion, though suffering for rain. The whole crop of cotton, with the excep r liou of u few acres of the Feeler, is the Dix on variety. The first suction wo came lo was manured with cotton seed, the next with Schley’s preparation, nnd the third and last with tho Dixon mixture. There was a very marked difference in the cotton—that fertil ised by theJDixon mixture beibgfnr superior to tho Schley, and the Hcliiey equally supe rior to the cotton seed. Mr Jackson is one of the best managers and roost intelligent planters we Iiavo, ami if no disaster befalls him we think ho may safely calculate on one hundred bales on the 100 acres manured with the Dixon fertili zer. The corn crop was superb and beyond ganger. Mnj Kly is confident of harvesting twenty bushels to the aero. Wc also looked at Mr. Jackson's melon patch, which was altogether good enough but uot equal to Gapt. Allen’s. lieturning to the house and cooling off with iced lemonade and other cooling bever ages, we were invited to a sumptuous barba- cuo prepared by the frot'diuun and eproad in tho grovo. Tiik Dinner Was a triumph of tho art—pork, mutlou, kid and beef, roasted over the coals and. de liciously snuced, covered tho tabic in great profusion, and cliickon pie, fruit nnd pound cuke, tarts, pics nnd all manner of delicacies und sweet moats gladdened the repast and sharpened the appctitoBof tho guests. Alter tho white people had dinod, tho table was reloaded, and the freodmen and freed women and children went in and done ample justico to themselves and tho good things be fore them. After dinner a colored violinist was press- ed into service and t he young ladies and gen tlemen shortened the hours of the afternoon in the heated whirl of “a trip on tho light fantastio toe.” Ceofb Generally. rp wore throe of Col. Lookell’s mana gers, Messrs. Allen, Magbeo and Loo, and quito a number of other neighboring plant ers present, all of whom reported their crops in good condition, and nono of them were willing to admit inferiority to Maj. Ely’s. We were astonished to hear that they were all suffering seriously for rain. A district of some ten milek square, extending from Mnj. Ely’s west ahd southwest, is in a critical condit^n, and if the drought is prolonged many days the cotton will be out short ma terially. There were two Indy planters present on the occasion, who rank with our best uiana- S its and never make a failure. We passed e plantation of one of thein, and her crop Is as good os anybody’s, and as clean ns a garden The 6tber affirms she has 400 acres as good as Maj.
