The Savannah Morning News com
ments on this article as follows :
We are not at all surprised that the
New York Tt:thunk, in its zealous
solicit title for the commercial prosper
ity of kite South, should advocate the
building up of another seaport in Geor
gin, with 4 lines of steamers to New
York, Ac.” The more seaj>ort8 there
are on the South Atlantic coast to di
vide the commerce ot our section, the
more small commercial centres will
then be tributary lo New York. We
confess,however, that we have been
tin hie to comprehend the lively in
terest manifested in the Brunswick
scheme by some of our eotemporarics
in tiie interior of the State. The Ail-
gust a Chronicle, ior instance, advo
cates with etpml zeal the making of
great seaports ol both Port Itoyai and
Brunswick, lias our Augusta friend
ever asked himself the question who
are the interested parties in these new
proj< cts ?
We are aware that the Senior ed
itor of the N ews, and perhaps a few
other ant itpialed fogies of his coterie,
who cannot se?an inch further into
tlio millstone than 2te who picks it,
are trying to propagate the bugaboo
that northern capitalists are investing
in the Port Royal ami Brunswick en«
terprises, simply with a Mev to di

»f the importance to them of a rail.,
road connection with Ibuuswick, it
can he found iu the attempt of the
Central Railroad to lease fur a term
of years, and thus conirol the Itail

the entire transportation, and making
the people of these States pay them

rival.
About ten years ago, an effort was
made to obtain -late aid by suhsc. ip*
tion to the Brunswick & Florida
Road. This met violent opposition.
The presses ot Savannab dencauced il
in unmeasured terms, at unconstitu
tional ami unjust, an outrage upon the
people of the State, &c. The Bill was
afterwards amended transferring the
proposed State aid to the Atlautic &
Guff Ron], atul passed. What a
cltauge! The presses of Savannah be
came as quiet as sucking pigs, and
from that day to this not a murmur
has escaped them on the subject. In
1301, iu spite of the desperate efforts
of its opponents, the track was laid
from Brunswick to Teheauville, 00
miles, connecting with the Atlantic
& Gulf Road. Scarcely had the last
rail been laid to that ]K>int when the
Savannah Republican, advocated its
being seized by tl^ military authori
ties ot Savannah, a military neces
sity, the stock being owned tUQSlly at
the North. A lewfweeks belore, the
iVntral Railroad, by management
or mismanagement, had |>ermitled all
their Steamers, one after another, to
go North, where they were seized by
the IT. S. Government aiid used
against the Confederates. ‘ Some of
tin se Steamers were sent North after
ot heis of the same liue had l»een seiz
ed. \\ li* the military authorities of
Savannah t r the Republican could see
no improprit ty in this, we are at a
loss to determine.
it was m#t long before the sugges*.
lion of the Reputdican was adopted.
The road was seized, taken up, and
what become of the Iron? A large
portion was used on the Live Oak, a
branch of the Atlautic & Gulf Road,
extending the mil road communica
tion of Savauiiuh. The print did not
see, at any rate, it did not express any
opinion that any injustice had been
done. Our people could not perceive
the justice ot being robbed, even
though it enriched Savannah—this
was perhaps from viewing things
at a different stand-point.
When tlicj Republican was taken
possession of by parties who had no
claim to it, our people felt an outrage
hail been committed. When it was
restored, they rejoiced that justice had
been done even to an enemy. And
we re pcctfully commend to Ills pe
rusal, his own comments ou the trans
action. We understand that lately,
the Republican avows himself as not
unfriendly to Brunswick. “Is Saul
t oo, among the disciples”—we are
glad to learn it is so.
At the last Session of the Legisla
ture an act was passed, endorsing the
Bonds of the Company, by the State.
One ot the conditions was the relier
ing of the State from all liability
arising from the destruction ot 66
miles of road taken possession of by it
itllie instance ot the Republican Thai
the stockholders after seven or eight
years were lo lie even iudirriTtly com
pensated iu part, was horrible. That
this road, supposed to have been killed,
was to rise again, was not tolerated.
The Savannah Press discovered
more unconstitutional acts in the
measure, saw more devils, goblins,
ghosts and spectres, than an old
toper would have done in a week’s at
tack of mania porta, overlooking the.
fact that several members ol the Leg
islature living “mighty Highly” Sa
vannah, proffered to vote ibr the Bill,
with all its horrors, if they would
make No. 6. on the Gulf Road the
lower terminus of the road. “Wlmt a

Notwithstanding the desperate ef
fort of foes, Brunswick ha3 quadru
pled in population within less than
three years—we trust an earnest ot
her fatnre growth and prosperity.
We do not charge all the people ot
Savannah with hostility to Bruns wide.
Far from it. There are many, perhaps
a majority ol her citizens, who*would
shrink from doing ufi an injoatice.—
Many of them have purchased lot*
and intend locating here. We bid
them welcome. That “Ring” that
once lorded it over the State of Geor
and still does'oyer Savannah, baa

and many matters t&Kt are
to be buried is the past, may

engaged m them.
