certain that the hay ought to be cut,
the bay book could not be found, and
belore it was lound it was too late,
ami tho hay waa all spoiled. Mr.
Beecher raises some ot the finest crops
ol wheat in the country, hot the un-
lavorablc difference between - the cost
of produeiug.it and its market value
alter it is produced has interfered con
siderably with its success ss a com
mercial enterprise, ills special weak
ness is hogs, however. lie considers
hogs the best game a farm produces,
lie buys the original pig for a dollar
and a half, snd feeds him forty dollars’
worth of corn, and then sells him tor
about nine dollars. This is the only
crop he ever made any money oil lit
loses on the corn, but he makes seven
dollars and a half on the bog. He
does not mind this, because he never
expects to make anything on the
corn. And any way it turns out, he
lias the excitement of raising the hog:
a-bether he geta the worth ,.f. him or.
not. His strawberries would be ^ar
eomfortablu success if the robins
would eat turnips, bnt they won’t,
and hence the difficulty. , .
One of Mr. Beecher’s most harrass-
ing difficulties in bis farming opera
tions comes of the dose resemblance
of diflerent sorts of seeds and plants
to eacii other. Two years ago his
far-sightedness warned him that there
was going to be a great scarcity of
watermelons, and therefore be pnt in
a crop of twenty-seven acres of that
fruit. But when they came up they
turned out to be pumpkins, and a:
dead |bas was the consequence.
