Dear Sir: I h*»e just received your Tery

henstonas lomy political views and purposes.
Let me repeat in this the substance of that
letter ; I slated that I had never claimed any

ant; but only of an official character,j that
he was always cordial and considerate to
wards Southern gentlemeu, etc. Thai is lhe
substance of my letter to (heConstitutionalist
to whioh I beg to add oue or two observations.
If it were possible fur me to advocate a
third term for any man. that advocacy cer
tainly could not be given to ono whose suc
cess would continue io power, for four years
longer, the party whose pitiless measures
have brought sorrow and ruin to our people
aad irreparable damage to our free institu
tions. And, if, while endeavoring to do no
a :t, and utter no word which, would need
lessly provoke hostility, nor to furnish any
excuse lor longer withholding from our peo
ple all the rights and ptivilcges guarauieed
by the Constitution, I should, as a represen
tative of Georgia, fail to impress the repre
seutalives of other seci ions with the convic
tion that the South is unalterably dec voted
to the great principles of Government advo
oaled by the Democratic party, and that she
ia wedded to the belief that liberty can be
preserved only by the re-establlshmeLt of
those principles as the permanent policy of
.the Government—then shall I esteem myself
aa being unworthy of the high compliment
you pay uie and utterly failing io meet the
obligations of tbe sacred trust* commited to
me. It is possible that I may exagerate the
danger of breaking a precedent which the
example of Washington has clothed wilh the
sanctity of law ; but if a third term were pro
posed for a Democratic President whom I re
garded as pure as Cato and as selfrsacri-
ficing as Doris, still I should feel that devo
tion to a Democratic leader had betrayed us
iaio a step whioh would (end to the final sub
version of our Democratic institutions.
In conclusion permit me lo say, that with
union and discretion in our ranks, indeed
without some egregious bluudar, we have the
best grounds for the most sanguine hopes of
success in Ihe next Presidential election.
I am, my dear air, very truly yours,
J. B, Gordon.

The following ia one of his pithy and
pointed shafts:

The above oaption is a-quotation from the
Radical speech delivered by Major Wbiteley
on the Courthouse Square, in this oily, last

are attributable to the white vote, or to the

aud nurse the baby, aud when it is asleep
wash up the lea things, aud go to bed at
niue o’clock ru be‘'out of the way.*’ What
will beoome of us then? Surely we have
fallen ou evil times. A heller and truer
mode of life is to have plenty of everything
that is good to eat and drink, which imparts
nourishment and strength, and as much of u
as you want. The idea of getting up from
dbe table hungry is unnatural, and absurd.,
aad hurtful—quite as m-ch so as getting up
in the morning before your sleep is out, on
the mischievous principle that “early to rise
makes a man healthy, wealthy, and wise.
Early rising, in civilized society, always
tends to shorten life. Early rising of itself
never did any good. Many a farmer’* l»oy
has beeu made an invalid for life by being
made lo gel up at daylight, before his sleep
was out. Many a young girl baa been si tint -
eJ in body and mind and constitution by be
ing made to get up before the system !i
hail* its full rest. All who are growing, ail
who work hard, and all weakly persons
should he more comfortable to get up than
to remain in Led; that is the only true meas
ure of efficieney or rest aud sleep. Any one
who gets up in the morning feeling as if he
"would! give anything in the woHu - to re
main in bed a while longer, does violence to
his own uttture.thud will always suffer from
it—not immediately, it may be, but certainly
in latter years, by the cumulative ill effects
of this most unwise practice. In any given
case, Ihe person who gets up iu the morning
before he is fully rested will lack just that
much of the energy requisite for tbe day a
pursuit.
As a people, we do not get rnnngh sleep,,
we do not gei enough real, we will not take
time for three things: hence our nervous*
ness, our instability, our hasty temper, and
the premature giving out of the stamina of
life. Half of us are old at three score, Uie
very time a man ought to he in his mental,
moral and physical prime. Half of our
w ▼ s, e-peeially in the farming districts, d e
long before their time, because they do not
get rent and sleep proportioned to their la
bor. Niue times out of ten it would be bel-
ter for alt parties if tbe fanner should get up
apd light the .fires and prepare break last for
Jiia wife, she coining directly from her loilel
to the breakfast table, because tt almost al
ways happens that she has to remalu up to
set things right long after .the husband has
gone to bed, when really lie has notlfing to
do after supper but go to bed. This is a
monstrously cruel imposition on wives qnd
mothers,—llall's Journal of Health.

authorship of “All Quiet Along Ihe Potomac
To-aighi, that I might ovdvlodk a large
number of letters written by me to my wife
from Virginia, during the flimmer and fall
of 1831, thinking that some one of them
might enable me to fix or approximate Jutes
that had escaped my memory when 1 last
wroleyou. And l am gratified LeyqmJ meas
ure lo inform you fj»*}t fhtj gejjrcj, hqs not
been in vain.
You will remember that in roy communica
tion to you. published in the Savaunah Morn
ing News, I staled that after acquainting my
brother aud l'r Ro-.uvick with Ihe noble
lyric in question, while still in camp, I sub*
sequently read it to Mrs, A9hton. I find now
that I wrote to her on the subject before return
ing to Georgia. I hove before me a letter
addressed lo her, written on coarse, yellow
Confederate paper, dated “Camp 2d. Qeorgi%
Regiment, near Centerville, Ya., Oct. Crd,
18t>l,”ii} which the following sentence oc
curs; *?Ypon wr^arrlval at home, should I
be so fortunate aa to obtain (he hoped for
furlough, 1 will read you the touching and
beautiful poem mentioned in my letter of
last week—‘All Quiet Along the Potomac’—*
written by my girlishly modest friend, Tbad-
deus Oliver, of the Buena Vista Guards. I
should like for you to know him, for though
almost as diffident and retiring ae a gentle
girl, lie is a man* of culture, fine literary
taste, and an excellent lawyer.”
From this letter, therefore, 1 am enabled
to say with positiveness and certainly, that
these now celebrated lines were familiar Ic
me at least a month or six weeks bef9rt they ap
peared in Harper's. There is auother circum
stance, loo, connected with the earlier pub
lication of this poem, to which I wish to call
your attention. Iam unable now to recall
the precise tim© when I first s*w it in print,
but this I remember with perfect distinct ness:
That it was introduced as a waif, or as having
been found in the pocket of an unknown dead
soldier. Vou may have seen such a preface
io it yourself. At any rate I am sure there
must lie many still living who will recall t bis
fact.
Whatever th? world may hereafter think
of the authorship of these beautiful lines, I
at least shall live and die under the firm and
unalterable conviction .that they were con
ceived and first expresjfW by your gifted and
lamented father.
Yours truly.
