lOOMSa AND BROWN.
Editor Albany Ncxu:
The recent Commencement exercises of the
State University, mt Athens, was the occasion
from which msch good was done for the
titate ar.d people. The Board of Trustees,
with grpat unanimity, elected Dr. B. H.
Tucker Chanoellor, Dr. Speer, Professor of
Belles Lcttrcs, and Gen.'YTm. M. Broun, Pro*
fexsor of History and Politioal Science.
The Board, appreciating the Importance cf
true learning io the principles and roles of
government, invited Gen. Toombs To deliver
course of lectures on the trot principles of
government to the students annually, wbioh
he consented to do, without a salary.
The State College, under President Broun,
is a decided success. This gentleman is en
titled to the thanks of the people for the
skill, abilty and industry he has brought to
bsar in perfecting this department. He is
one of Georgia’s beneffiofors. The students
in this department have shown great profi
ciency, and man/ of them stand very high as
accomplished, educated gentlemen. The do
nation to esoh county of fie a scholarships to
the number of fheir representatives io the
Legislature, has not been received by h num
ber of the counties in our portion of the State.
This is a fine opening to get a good and
obeap education. The scholarships are not
confined to any cUaa. Ir is open tn all de
siring an education, after the plan nf ihe ap«
pointmcnis to Wc^t Point.
The meeting of Gov. Brown and Gen.
Toombs, on the Board of Trustees, both zeal
ously engaged it. deviling plans for the edu
cation of the young men of tho Slate, was *n
interesting exhibition. t*nd ihe deep interval
manifested hy each in this great work, open
ed the wr*y Air a recor.filiation between then*;
and through the intervention of Gov. Jenkins,
the •diatcbet was bnried,” and kind relations
were estnbliahad between them—a good ex*
ample for others, and it is to be hoped that
it may he followed, and that other fends may
bo averted in the future This la no time lor

operation of all her heM minds. Let na hste

Some of our letter writers have referred to
the election of Dr. Tucker a- a triumph »f the
Baptists, and have incautiously su’d, -This
renders, the University as much a Baptist
College a& Mercer or Any other.” This
Charge is entirely gratuitous and *gain*t th*
facts, na the University is now officered in
the several chairs. The Episcopalians have
four Professors with a communion of. four
thousand in this State. The Perebyterian
Church with a membership of from sight to
nine thousand, have two chairs. The Meth
odists, with eighty-four thousand, have three
Professors, and.the Baptists, with over 115-
000 white members, fill only three of
the chairs. It»? true that the Baptist fam
ilies of this State patronize the . University—
send a greater number of their eons them
than cither of the other Churches. This is
because there *re a larger namber of Baptist
families in the Slate. The location sf Mer
cer at Macon does not snit the Baptists of
Middle and North Georgia, and the people art
satisfied that the University is a good place to
eduoatc their sons. In this respect, and on
no otber^c&n it be said that this is a Baptist
or denominational College.
The f‘Unification'Scheme" of Dr. Clarks
was presented to the Board by him in an able
and interesting eddrens, and, with soms mod
ifioatisns, wss hnanimously adopted, and the
same will bs presented to the next Legisla
ture.
This wilt work a great change in cur pret*

much attention. '’Dougherty.'*

could be had.
Feuding the discussion of this resolution,

and
Whereas, Thi» body is fully alive to the
importance of combined action and unity of
feeling, so to harmonize upon some one -citi
zen ol the county, and wit h the view to carry
out the above desired object, be it
Resolved, That tie chairmen of this meet*
ing appoint a committee of four, one from
aueh district of the county; whose duty it
shall be to ascertain from the tax books tha
number of white voters in each district, and
for each twenty white voters so reported,
one delegate be appointed to meet in conven*
Don at Newton on the fiist Tuesday of Sep
tember. to nominate a candidate for the Leg
islature. We recommend that the district
meeting be held on the 15th inat.
Objections were made to the second section-
hot upon the statement of ihe mover. That it
was simply a recommendation to the districts
that they could adupt or not, as to them
might seem be*t. The objections wer* with
drawn.
Col Hammond offered the following ameod
ment :
That the nominee of said convention shall
stand pledged to have an enabling act passed
authorizing the voters of Baker county to
vote upon the location o. tUe court house.
Adopted.
W W Williams moved to amend, the first
section by ^betituting—
That the district representation in the
nominating convention should stand as hers
tofore. Rejected.*
An amendment was then offered, striking
out the word “white” wherever it occurred
before the word "voters,” which amendment
was rejected.
Wuereupou a part of the representation
rom the ninth, twelfth and eight districts
withdrew from the meeting, declaring their
intention not to abide by the action.
The resolution aa amended wot then unan
imously adopted.
The Secretary was iustrncted to fnrnish
