Mr. Hill and Gen. Gordon. Then Mr. Hil
was introduced, and os he arose was greeted
with a perfect storm of applause. He spoke
for more than two hours, and his effort on
that occasion was, for argumentative power,
logio and statesman-like diction, one of the
I reatest speeches of the day. It would be
oily in ue to atempt even a faint dlscription
of this truly great address. We had intend*
ed, however, to give his ideas upon the Louis
iana matter, but in view of the fact that h*
ha promised to give them to the public at
an early day, we reserve our remarks on that
head; bnt this much we remember the gentle
man to have said: That the people of Louis
iana have made the true issue, and while
submilling to the United 8tates Government,
would not be ruled by usurpers, thieves and
■ ’agabonds. Gen. Gordon, the great Soldier
j Itatesman, followed Mr. Hill, and for nearly
two honrs, oocupied the stand in au unusually
eloquent and impressive address, counseling
the peopis to right and to stand by their
candidates. The General, while cool and
free from passion during his entire speeeh,
exhibited nevertheless all that native fire
which burns in bis greet Southern heart.
Both speakers were continually interrupt
ed with the wildest demonstrations of mp-
rtanse, and the enthusiasm knew no bounds.
