Mb. Bditob :
reports from different countiee in the
State, as far as heard from—and but few
conatiee remain to ho heard from, thanks to
tho efficiency cf the country press—give hut
gloomy aceonnta of the cotton orop. It cer
tainly cannot exceed a half crop. The eye-
of labor with wbioh Texas, in common
with the entire 8outb, is eursed, it being en
tirely negro labor, combined with the unfa
vorable seasons in the planting and picking
seasons, has ent the crop short. The negroes .
will not work. The planters cannot oontrol
thorn, and if they attempt it, a Radical bowl. ffrpcll
is raised of “hatred to the negro,” “refusal 1 1 cai1
to recognise his rights,” “injustice,” “op
pression,” and a thousand other lies, uttered
by priests of fraud for political effect.
Tho result of this inability to control col
ored labor is, that tW crops are put In the
ground from twe to eix weeks later than they
onght to bo. This leaves the cotton to the
tender mercies of the worms or of dry weath
er if it should set inP. Fortunately means
havo been discovered to combat successfully
th- worms, by means of the patent destroy
ers, hat it sntails unnecessary expense and la
bor upon the planter.
The grain orop,. fortunately, has been very
good this ysar, and all planters and farmers
have a sufficiency of breadstuffs, and some to
spare to the immigrant. The seasons have
been propitious for the grass, and the range
all over the State is most excellent, whiob
enables, .along with the superabundance of
grabvevery one to havo.plenty of meat,
thongh there Is not as much bacon as there
oughtAo he, owing to the continual raids of
freodmen upon the stook bogs. That class of
oar population have bat little regard for the
difference botwoen meum et tuum when a
hog is involved.
Tho excellence of the range has enabled
oar stock raisers to realise handsomely from
their beef cauls—many thousand head hav
ing been sold in the home market and driven
to tho large eities of the New West, Kansas.
Missouri, Colorado, Illinois, Nebraska and
the Territories. The cattle interest of Texas
Is one of its greatest sources of wealth—the
bread prairies affording immense and splen
did pasturage for the hundreds of thousand
head of sioek that roam over them. There
are handreds of oitisens of Texas .who own
ten, twenty, thirty and evpn a hundred thou-
•ad of stock, and who yearly make
•mall fortunes from the sale of their beeves.
Texas after awhile will be the greatest
tracer making State In the Union. Already
tanneriee are springing up Ilk# magie through-
outitslimils, working op the superabundance
of hides into leather.
There ie a fair prospect of Houston having
first-class tannery, a gentleman of thie city
having parehaced tho right of this county
to use Peter’s patent ’process for tanning
leather. He contemplates establishing a
large tannery, also a shoe, harness and trunk
mannfaetory in tins city next spring.
Houston will be ahead In enterprise and in
all those movements oaloulated to develop it
self into a groat eity, as well as materially
add te the prosperity of tho 8tato at large.
