‘If the Demoorsoy ia 0!.i ; and Indiana, were
due ia a great measure to the Currency
p'-auk in the party platforms of both States;
but to their amazement the leading papers of
New York and the East, boldly and no.
Uuthingly attribaied the successes to other
causes, and grossly perverted me real issue.
Their theory iz so wantonly false, thal
even the Western Republicans take on a big
disgust, and frankly come to the frdot with
the truth. The following extracts from at
able, and apparently carefully advised edi
torial, In the Cincinnati Gazette of the 19th-
{a leading liepubiican paper},—clearly de
fines the “line'of fight,” and effectually si
lences the World and Ua “hard money” co
laborers in the work of misrepresentation
and perversion. The Gazette says:
Beyond these general remarks we propose
now to refer to only one feature of the Ohio
and Indiana canvass, viz.: the currency
question, and we refer to this because there
ia a disposition on the part of Eastern Demo
cratic organs to misrepresent, either inten-
licnn'lyor through ignorance, the meaning
of the verdict. The Republicans of Ohio
adopted a pisiform in favor of a sound eur-
reooy and against inflation.- The Democratic
party, on the other hand, resolved in favor of
paper money and aa much more of it as the
interests of the country taay require. Both
were iotended to be guarded, the one against
a hurried effort to resume specie payments
and Ike other against extravagant inflation.
On the slump, however, the issue w*s more
oleerly defined. The Republicans took the
ground that there is currency enough, and
that while care should be taken net to move
ia ihe direction of specie payments more rap
idly than the business of the country wiold
bear, yet bard money should be the objective
point. The Democrats, on the other hand,
took the ground that there ia not cnrrency
enongh; that business is dull because cur.
rency is ecaroe, and that plenty of paper
money and easy times as the result, and not
hard money, should be the objective point.
Thus the issue was squarely m&dq up, and.
upon it the Republicans weie defeated.* That
the Republican doctrine was right and the
Democratic doctrine radically wrong, time
wilt prove, but the right was voted dawn and
the wrong voted up.
In the light of these developments in Ohio
and Indiana, it is amusing to read the com
ments of each papers as the New York World
upon the election in these States ; especially
is it atunring to read that the verdict of the
people was infavor of hard money and against

York Democracy, is directly the opposite to

comes before the people with tbs flag of

these two nett, so vasuy different in
character and purpose, the people of this Dis

us examine the oat-look and see what the
prospects are, find o-t if possible what the
result will be in this terribiy earnest contest
between might and right, between civil lib

Two monthe ago, when Whiteley sat at his
political desk arranging figure*, he put this
county down aa 1200 ia his favor, Thomas
TOO, Decatur 500, Calhoun 300, email major*
ities iu Brooks, Lowndes. Randolph and Clay,
leaving Early, Torrell, Baker and Mitchell
doubtful. This may appear to the reader to
have beeu rather «n extravagant •summary
for the Major to make, but each undoubtedly
were hie calculations prior to ths last elec
tion. That was the face of hie slate then;
what it is new, since the Ootober bombshell
came crashing through hie works and pene
trated to the very citadel of bis hopes, may
be better imaged than described.
Let us interview the slate ae it now ap
pear?, and see whnt we find. In this county
with his beasted solid majority of 1200,
Whitety cannot muster up a respectable au
ditory to listen to him on the stamp. The
truth is, the colored people of Dougherty are
beginning to realise their true condition, and
are fast deserting Wbitoley’a banner. They
have followed hi n blindly for eight years,
and have failed to discover any good result*
ing to themselves, but only have the satisfac
tion of seeing his false, treacherous premises
melt as driven snow, leaving but one object
attained—the giving to Whiteley and his few
chosen henchmen and leaders office and mon
ey But we digress. In Dougherty a email
Radical majority may be expected ; but run
ning down the column, what do we find in
Whiteley*s other strongholds ? Thomas rea
dy and only waiting to give Smith TOO major
ity ; while Decatur's brave sons fp*l confi
dent Qnd determined that they will defeat
Richard in his own oonnty, supplementing
their late grand and glorious achievement
with a victory even more signal than the ono
which immortalised them at the October poll.
Calhoun, the only other doubtful county, may
possibly poll a close vote with a slight ad van
tage in favor of Whiteley ; but this will be
owing to tho disaffection caused by the Indo
peudont candidate in the Senatorial election,
and, if the strenuous efforts now being made
to heal this breach are successful, Calhoun
too will cast a majority of votes tor Smith.
So much for the four counties upon which
Mr. Richard had set his dearest hopes.

Whiteley, and three or four of his imported,

Instead of ollice and pound-cake for their
votes, they have been paid off in hope de
