Why (ice. Sherman is Out of Favor.
Why is it that a demand for Gen Sher
man’s rcsignutiou appears ho suddenly in the
paper at Washington which is known as the
otheial organ of tho Administration.
fN^ew York Times
The New York Sun, editorially, says : 4 *Tt
nil grows out of Sherman's misconduct to
ward the ruling family. When Mr. F. D.
Grant graduated at West Point two or three
jrears ago, aud was commissioned as a second
lieutenant in a cavalry regiment, his affec*
tiunato mother determined that instead of
serving with his company among the cruel
and savage Indians he should enjoy life at
Washington in some official capacity that
would keep him about Ihe court with as large
pay ns possible. Tho best thing that could
he discovered in this liuc was a place on
Sherman’s staff. It would make the young
fellow a Colonel, with the full pay and al
lowanccs of that rank, and it would insure
his presence at Washington with very little
to do. When Gen. Sherman was applied to
ilh this proposition he flatly declincAl. Ilis
staff was full, he said ; its members had serv
ed with him through ilic war, and he would
not dismiss any of them to make a place for
any new graduate of the Academy, no matter
whose son he might happen to be. And if a
vacancy should oocur, he should certainly
appoint to It some officer who had deserved
promotion by his services in the war. This
refusal was the beginning of Gen. Sherman’s
disgrace at the While House, which became
eomplotc when his daughter’s wedding beat
t of Miss Grant in pomp and splendor,
I it ha& now culminated iu this demand
for his resignation. Denied by Sherman, the
application was next made to Sheridan at
Chicago. lie had not the courage of his su
perior officer, and did net dare to disobey
the family command. lie turned ont Col.
Forsyth, ono of the bravest of the brave, with
half dozen rebel bullets in his body, and
made Fred Grant Lieutenant-Colonel in his
place, with the chance of loafing in Chicago
or Washington as he might prefer. And now
f Sherman could be driven to resign, Sheri-
dau would become General of the Army, and
Frod.. would be a Colonel instead of* a Lieu-
cnant-Colonel, and would get about $71-0
a year more pay.”
•*rom the Macon Telegraph.
Dealt! or Sir. James M. Gray.
M«*. James M. Gray, of Jones county, afler
a severe and somewhat protracted illness,
•lied at liis residence about seven o’clock yes
terday morning. The deceased was born on
the 5ih of February. 1S13, consequently, was
in the sixiy third year of lus age He was
reared in Jones county, and grew up to be
one of its most influential citizens. No man
in his community had greater infiucuce over
the masses than he, and no man enjoyed in a
higher degree the respect aud confidence o!
the masses of the people. He was a man of
indomitable firmness of character, but of a
most genial and kindly disposition, and of
the most unflinching integrity. In all the
duties and obligations of life he was as true
as steel. His word was his highest obligation
His benevolence was only limited by his
tocanv, and he exercised it through the mere
law of benefiting his fellow-creatures. Da
ring the war he delegated unto himself the
mission of looking afler the poor of bis
county, and wherever there was want, be
was there also to relieve it. There were very
many women whose natural providers and
protectors were in the Confederate army, who
had reason to bless him for his charity. He
withheld nothing that he had which could
contribute to those who were in need.
While Mr. Gray was known only as a far
mer, in early life he studied and obiained a
full knowledge of ihe law ; but the practice
was distasteful to him, principally on ac
count of hi3 aversion to public speaking.—
But he was known as a good judge of law,
and his opinions upon legal questions were
respected lie was a msu of liberal educa
tion, and was well informed on most topics.
He represented his county for several terms
in the Georgia Legh-lature, and ihere has
not been a timc*in the last twenty-five years
when he could not have been the representa
tive from Jones. The candidacy has been
offered him time and again, and declined,
when bis simple acceptance was the only
guaranty that be was needed that he would
be elected. While in the Assembly he rank
ed ss one of its most influential members,
and he attained that dignity not by any bril
liant appeai^nce npon the floor, but by his
manly, quiet, dignified and firm support of
the measures he deemed wise, and his equally
firm and quiet opposition to measures he
deemed unwise.
But it was at his home that his finer quali
ties were displayed. His house was always
open io his friends, and his hospitality was
princely. He was a bachelor, but his home
abounded in all the comforts of life, and his
friends were the more welcome the longer
they stayed with him.
His love for his county lasted through life,
and it is intimated that it is illustrated in
one of his latest acts. We are informed that
hy his will the bulk of his property goe3 to
Mercer University, to be used in educating
poor young men from Jones county. Our
information is not precise upon this point,
