ous patrons in that State. He will be

Mr. M. Crinc returned front New'

ticipates better times ahead.
Mr. David Glauber, of the mam

discouraged at the prospects.
Our young friend, Mr. I). G. Lee,
left Irwinton last Tuesday morning
for Albany, where he will assume th.
duties of associate professor, in the
male academy of that place. While
we regret that he has thought best to
leave us, we congratulate the school
in having secured the services of one
who will, we believe, efficiently fill
the position.—Irwinton Southerner.
Mr. Lee arrived in our city last
Saturday, and on Monday entered
upon his duties in connection with
Mr. Cheves, Principal of the Male
Academy. Wo welcome Mr. Lee to
our city; and have no doubt he will
meet with eminent success in our
community.

A meeting of the Directors of the
Library- Association was held, last
Friday night at .the office of Wooten,
Jones & Davis. Important business
was transacted; anil wo can safely
promise our citizens that they will
hare a Library that they will be proud
to sustain and encourage. The Pres
ident, Mr. L. E. AVclch, offers to do
nate the use of his hall ifree of rent
for five years; or to present the As
sociation with AVelch & Mitchell’s
circulating library. These kind of
fers will be taken into consideration ;
meanwhile, thanks are returned to
Mr. AVelch for his liberality. The can
vassing committee are instructed to
go to work. By-laws were adopted;
and the wheels of business greased
generally.
Dougherty Superior Court.
The regular spring term of Dough
erty Superior Court convened on
Monday morning last, His Honor
Judge Wright presiding, Solicitor-
General Fleming appearing for the
Stato.
The Grand Jury was regularly or
ganized and sworn in. Judge Wriglil
delivered a lengthy, thoughtful and
vigorous charge, which, if followed
up by the body, (and we believe i:
will be) will he the means of bring
ing about considerable reformation
in our county. The Jury is compos
ed of good material, and it is not
probnbic that they will allow law
breakers to escape justice. They have
an able assistant in the person of So
licitor-General Fleming.
The Court transacted only a very
small amount of business Monday
and Tuesday; and suspended busi
ness for one day on account of the ab
sence of several members of the Bar.
This morning business begins in earn
est, and will continue for three weeks.
The criminal docket will be taken uji
next week; and Judge Crisp of the
Southwestern Circuit will manage
business the third week.
Leo Superior Court.
Quite a number of people wore in
attendance upon tlie first week of Ler
Supcrior Court. AVlien wc arrived at
Leesburg last Thursday. Judge Crisp
was ruling in his impartial, thorough
style, and giving general satisfaction.
The business of the Court will he
found elsewhere.
The Grand Jury, Judge E. I). Wat
son, foreman, made good and thor
ough research into the county’s con
dition and standing. Their report,
to he found in another column, shows
a watchful care and interest in the
county that is commendable. Our
Lee county subscribers had best read
the document carefully, and file it
away for future reference. Tlte re
marks concerning the work of the
County Court are sensible to the core;
ami show a wise appreciation for
that branch of the law. In speaking
of the reduction of the salary of the
Judge, K. J. Warren, it shows why it
should he done, and is a good stroke
of economy. The commendation giv-
on our friend Kit is most thoroughly
deserved. AVe know so from what
we heard of him in his official capac
ity. AVe are of the opinion that Lee
Is in a better conn.lition now than she
has been in some long while. Meeting
and commingling with the jieople, wc
heard them talk of how they are get
ting along, how they arc pitching
their crops, what they think the fu
ture will give them, etc., etc. As in
all of our counties, more rigid att.l
sure enough economy is being prac
ticed than ever before. The farmers
are injbetter spirits, and view the nu
merous fields of growing grain with
smiling faces. About the same area
of cotton will be put in as Inst year;
while the cereal crops arc materially
increased. Compost manure has been
used freely and liberally. Debt is
being shunned ; discretion is being
used all around; energy has longer
and more giant-like strides; and ev
ery index points to a more jiroMprr
ous era for our neighbors of Lee.
We found many warm friends of
Ihe News, and for their words of
cheer and appreciation we return
