We are glad to be able to state that
Mr. Geo. W. -Cheves and his efficient

THE FIRST DANCE.
The first dance of the season come
off at the Barnes’ House on Tuesday
night, and was a very plesantand en
joyable occasion. It was given in
honor of a trio of beautiful and ac
complished young lady visitors, Miss
Bcttie Moran, of Kentucky, Miss
Mary Lee Slaughter and Miss Ellie
Meader, of Brunswick. We took a
peep in at the scene about II o’clock,
and noticed the exceeding concinnity
and simple elegance or the ladies’ toil-
ets, and the gentle suavity and manly
bearing of (he gentlemen. We hear
it whispered that the visiting young
ladies have already many hearts
their charm strings.
The Ladlas* Ruppar.
The supper given by the ladies of
the Baptist church on last Friday
evening, at Willingham’s Hail, was
dsciared by all who attended a pleas
ant and extremely happy entree into
the season’s festivities and social gath
erings. It was managed with a good
deal of genius and taste, if we call
gcului, as some writer said, “indomi
table perseverance.” The supper end
etceteras were all that could have
been dssired; and the Immense us
semblsgeof the “hungry army” did
fall justice. On Saturday a luucheou
was spread, and was partaken of by
large number* of our citizens, from
town and country. The ladles de
serve a great measure of credit for
their efforts in placing in thorough
repair their house of worship.

A DEPLORABLE ACCIDENT.
We are extremely sorry to be called
upon to chronicle an accident that re
sulted so unfortunately to two most
beloved and accomplished ladies of
our community. On Monday last
Mrs. Dr. Heartwell and Mrs.fT. F.
Newell were coming into town in the
former’s carriage, and had gotten as
far as the Lawton place, when one of
the horses became a little frightened,
aud began to squat as if to kick. The
ladies, fearful of a runaway, jumped
out of the carriage, Mrs. Heartwell
receiving a serious and painftll inju
ry in the right knee, and Mrs. Newell
having her left ankle sprained. Assist
ance was procured, and the ladies
carried home.
Dr. Hilsman, the attending physi
cian, reports Mrs. Heartwoll doing
well. She will be confined to her
bed for two or three months. Mrs.
Newell will be up in a week or so.
All of our people regret the acci
dent very much. We uud rstand the
ladles are enduring their affliction
with great fortitude and courage.
Dousbsrtr Superior Court.
On Monday morning, his Honor,
Judge Wright, called the criminal
docket, and the Court has been ex
tremely busy this week. We under
stand that twenty-three true-bills
have been found to date by the Grand
Jury. This wing of the Court ad

week, during which time the Com

George Byne, (col.) who was tried
for simple larceny, was convicted and
sentenced to the penetontiary for four
years.
At this writing, the case of Manse
Bolden, (col) for the murder of bis
wife, is undergoing investigation.—
The body of the murdered woman it
will be remembered, was found in a
pond near the colored churches, this
city, some two or three months ago.
Since writing the above the Jury
in this case has returned a verdict of
“not guilty,” and Manse Baldon is a
free man again.
Next week, being tho third week of
the term, the Civil Docket will be
resumed, when Judge Crisp, of the
Southwestern Circuit, will preside.

was put down as a venture. Nearly
all the seed in this county are planted,
and should a frost come, the farmer
will be left in a bad condition. That
which to up is very regular, as a gen
eral thing, and there will be a heavy
dig for profit on the fleecy staple.—
▲bout as much land U used this

OATS.
There was an unusually large crop
of oats sowed, but it is feared by
many that the March drouth cut it
off considerable. Some, however,
are of the opinion that the crop will
yet head out well, and if it doei<,

greatly in demand.
Farmers are working hard, and the
seasons thus far, can not be consider

many of our people will still be com

LEESBURG ITEMS.
We had quite a liberal turn out on
last Sabbath at the Baptist church.
Rev. J. T. McBryde officiating. The
congregation was attentive aud deco-
rious. while the sermon was deliver
ed with that depth of pathos common
with that Christian gentleman. In the
afternoon we adjourned to
8TARKVU.LE,
where we found an interesting Sun
day school going on at the Baptist
chuch, under the superintendance of
Jndge G. M. Stokes, with a corpse of
competent teachers and a host of little
smliing faces. In fact, the whole com
munity lend their presence on the oc
casion, and this to the only wuy in
which we can account for the Stark-
ville Sunday school being such a com -
plete success. The singing was good.
The young people have special occa
sions for practice, and when it be
comes necessary to perform this very
essential religious service they arc
always equal to the occasion. After
school we formed some very pleasant
acquaintances, both ladies and gen
tlemen, and have this much to say of
the deftinct village; if Leesburg has
risen upon her ruins, and eclipsed her
in mercantile advantages aud divert
ed most of her capital to this point,
there to an element left in old Stark-
ville sufficient to form a community
of moral, social, whole-souled people,
and they will make you pleasant every
time you go there.'
Before this goes to press we will he
in possession of a new Post Mistress.
Preparations are being made at the
store of Judge Stokes to receive the
P. O. furniture; and we understand
that Mr. II. Ware is to l»c deputy.
Despite the hard times and counter
feit nickels, our community continues
to improve. Jno. T. Carter is rear

having a nice cottage built, and the

There arc some people in one 01-

pay a great deal of attention to mis

we heard of one saying it is a “cess

remarks, such as it being the “home
