We have just received from the
publisher, F. W. Helmlck, 130 West
Fourth street, Cincinnati, O., a “Lul-
laby,” recently issued by him, which
hi pronounced by competent critics to
be a very fine musical production.—
It can he played on the organ or pi
auo. Price, 40 esnts postpaid.'
Sluce our last Issue the seasons have
been extraordinarily good; and farm
ers and gardeners seemi more buoyant
than ever. A well known planter of
this county, (and one of the most ex
perienced) was in our sanctum Mon
day evening. Said he:
“I’ve lived here a long time, and
uever in my life have I seen a better
prospect for the farmers at this season
of the year. In the first place there
was a better general start; fence cor
ners were cleaned out, fencos wore
made high and substantial, fields were
woH cleaned, ploughing was thor
ough, and stock all in good order.—
Much small grain was sown ; about
as much corn as.cotlon ; ami the sea
sons have lout-lied' nil iu exactly the
right time. "Just let us have 8 cents
for cotton next fall, and we will eome
out top side up.” _ !
“And, as for gardens,” said he, “I
have tiie finest I ever had in my life.”
Then a frown came over his face,
when he said, “Look out for frost on
the22nd and 23rd. and if it tines eome
the cotton music is up. Iam afraid it
will be here. The signs all point in
that direction. 1 only hope.that I ain
mistaken; but have saved, enough
cotton seed to meet such an emergen
cy. If wc can only get over Wed
nesday, 24th, wc are sale.” And then
our friend bid us good day. ,

As each twelve month passes away,
the beautlflil custom of the South of

becomes more universal. There is a
hollowness and purity in the senti

Spring and Summer Announcement
FROM THE
Holy Week.
PALM SUNDAY—THE CL03IS0 DAYS OF
LEST—EASTER SUNDAY.
This week is denominated Holy
Week, because it is commemorative
of the death of Christ and redemp
tion of mankind. Iu early Christian
ages ppople were accustomed to fast
on one meal of bread, meat and wa
ter, while many abstained from any
food during the entire week. The
Lutheran, Catholic, Protestant Epis
copal churches and the Church of
England solemize Holy Week, and
haVe special services every day. The
Litany was read with good effect yes
terday morning, and wilt be road
again to-morrow morning.
In some of the above churches the
office of Tencbrae (darkness, from the
darkening of the churches) is chanted.
The services arc very interesting, and
typical of events in the last days of
Christ, His death and resurrection.
Last Sunday was Paint Sunday, the
last but oue in Lent, ft is designed,
by the blessing and distribution of
palms, to represent tiie circumstance
of Christ’s triumphal entrance into
Jerusalem.
On Good Friday and Holy Satur
day various forms and solemnities are
engaged in by some churches. On the
former the alter is denuded to simpli
fy the desolation of the church ; and
.what is railed the adoration of tho
Gross is performed. No consecration
takes place on Good Friday. On the
latter they have the blessing of the;
“new fire” obtained from flint’and
steel, because vital light and life came
from Christ, the Rock; services em
blematic of Christ arisen; the chant
ing of all the prophetic passages of
the Old Testament pointing to Christ's
resurrection, etc, etc.
Next ^Sunday, the 21sL. is Easter,
the festival of the resurrection of
Jesus Christ. The ladies of the Epis
copal church will have their house of
worship beautifully decorated, iu
commemoration of tiie day. Mai.y
pleasant stories and legends exist us
to the observance of the festival in
different churches. It was called “Sun
day of joy,” the austerities of Lent
being over tho people gave themselves
up to enjoyment.
