Turnpike beyond Gillionville is in

that need immediate filling.
The causeways on all the roads in

rURLlC SCHOOLS
have also received our careful atten
tion. and we take pleasure in report
ing, wc find our County School Com
missioners to have done all in their
judgment to make the present system
tlicient as possible. We congrat
ulate the county on having such a
hoard as takes a deep interest in pub
lic educational matters. We find that
there lias been during the year 1877
Ji public schools in the countv—8 for
whites and 15 for colored children.
That -11 white and 1.374 colored chil
dren have been taught at those schools;
and that fitiOiSt have been expend
'd for this pur|H>se. We fittd many

system mid respectfully recommend’
that proper steps bo taken to remedy
the same. Wc would recommend a
rigid examination of applicants for
position of teacher, and thatonlv such
In* employed who have shown proper
proficiency. That a smaller number
of schools than last year might be
propcrlv taught, and avail more ben
efit to the children.
Further, that our representatives
will take such action as will secure
the enlargement of our school fund,
whereby they can be continued at
least for ten months in the year.
We find that the workings of the
COUXTT COURT
is of great advantage to the county;
disposing speedily, at a small expense,
a great deal of matter which former
ly was brought before the Superior
Court. As its volume of business lias
increased considerably we fix the sal
ary of the Judge of the County Court
at |80l) per annum from date, and the
pav of jurors of both courts at $1 per

Recent investigations of an accusa
tion ol' murder have shown to us a
defect in the law, by not empowering
coroners to employ skillful medi
cal aid at time of holding inquests.—
With the present system, forthe want
of careful and skillful examination of
the deceased, innocent parties are too
apt to suffer, and guilty ones to - es
cape. Wo therefore suggest the care
ful examination by our Representa
tives of the able argument sub
mitted to our body by our worthy
citizen and townsman, Dr. B. M.
Cromwell, and make such amend
ments as seem proper to meet the de
mands. Said argument may be
found iu the hands of the Clerk of
Superior Convt.
On the eve of onr closing session,
it has been brought to our notiee that
there exists in the countv a system of
stealing sheep, hogs and cattlo. from
the woods, which renders it exceed
ingly dificult for the owners to single
out the person committing such deed.
The only remedy suggestive to meet
the case) and aid in affording protec
tion's the enforcement oftliocity or
dinances. compelling butchers and
dealers in green meats, to deliver to
the marshalol' the city, the cars of the
slaughtered animal,'giving brand if
any, and name of pprson from whom
purchased.
We, therefore, in hehalfof country
tax payers, request that the city au
thorities enforce said ordinances, be
lieving it would not only aid them in
spotting the offenders, but would fur
ther tend to suppress the crimes, l,y
showing the trap they would likely he
caught in, and be tjiade to feel the pep*
alties of the law.
To His Honor, Judge Wright, we
acknowledge onr high appreciation
of his ability as a judicial officer, his
dignified bearing, and most especial
ly thank him lor the valuable services
rendered this body in its efforts to
sustain the law.
In His Honor, Judge Crisp, presid
ing third week of the term, we recog

Did Doorkeeper Field renounce
liis allegiance to Hie United States
when lie took service with the Khe
dive of Egypt? If lie did, is he not a
foreigner x—Dayton (Ohio) Journal.
This is a magnificent question and
it Huems to lie disturbing small Re
publican minds. | It might be well to
Hay that at the time Gen. Field took
service, as a nieans of livelihood, un
der Hie Khedive, lie did not owe al

that some years before—Boston Post.
From Baker.
Baker Co., Ga., Apr. 15, ’78.
Eihtors News—I propose in this
communication to give yon a few
dote from Baker.
Spring Is now fully upon us. Veg
etation has sprung into new life, the
earth is literally clothed in beauty;
the mild, balmy air is laden with the
rich fragrance of a thousand flowers;
tho many birds in their excessive joy
warble 111611- merry songs from “cur-
ijt niorii ’til dewy eve.” AH nature
seems to have risen np to contribute
to ;thc happiness of ungrateful
and undeserving man, who lords it
over all, and yet he is not capable of
appropriating the pleasure that are
brought to his door.
This year seems to have ushered in
a new era in our couuty. Old fences
d oid houses have been taken away
new ones fill tlicir places. Many
new buildings have been erected
Where none appeared before, and
what is better still, they arc all put
np with a view, to comfort and dura
bility. Such has not been the ease
heretofore. More fruit trees have
been planted this year than in any
five years since the war. All these
things indicate that there are beUor
times in Hie near future.
A considerable acreage has been
given to wheat, which promises a fair
yield; a very large acreage lias been
sown to oats, which is getting to lie
the leading stock-food crop of this
county. Six years ago the value of
oats was only known to a few.
!fqe young corn is looking fine, and
yield is an average there will
abundant supply made. Cotton
g is now about over, nnd all is
along very ' smoothly, the
and their laborers working
in hajfinony. The health of the peo
ple is remarkably good, I hear of no
slyness.
Pmona is taking special care of her
department, as the prospect for a
plentiful fruit crop was never better.
The people of this county have
fillip .accepted tljo situation. They
hate learned thoroughly the hard
lesson of economy taught them by the
hard times of the past six years, and
having established themselves in their
own confidence, they are now self
dependent and will soon l>e inde
pendent.
As the tree becomes more strong
and powerful- by reason of having
been wrung and tossed and beat by
tlie storms, so our people throughout
the South have become more power
ful by reason of their adversity. If
all I have written here is true, and I
think it is, then the prospect for this
county and the entire South is much
brighter than at any time since the
war. All commodities are offered at
very low priceB. Bacon is much low
er thah 1 have ever known before.
But I hope no farmer will allow him
self to ho allured by the low price of
bacon from giving special attention
to his hog crop, saying within him
self it is cheaper to buy meat than to
raise it. The price of meat is now so
low that it is not remunerative to the
producer; this being the fact, the at
tention of the hog raiser will In*
drawn away from his heretofore very
profitable occupation. This, of course,
will reduce tho production. Now,
should the Southern farmer, by rea
son of the low price of meat, fail to
give the necessary attention to liis
hogs, thinking it will coat less to buy
than to raise his meat? Asa natural
consequence the demand will soon
become greater titan the supply, so if
we foil to raise all the meat at home,
those that possibly can, we may, in
tlic course of two or three years, be
glad to get a little meat at twenty
'cents per pound, for cash, or forty
on time, with lieu, mortgage, hill of
sale, etc., for security.
In this connection it may not be out
of place to say a word in reference
to the treatment of the hog in early
spring, when he is passing through
the most trying time during the year.
It is generally the practice of the
farmer iu the late foil to turn all their
stock hogs into their fields front
which the crops have been gathered.
The hogs glean therefrom a sufficient
amount of food to keep them ill fine
order without further feed or alien
Hon for several weeks, hut when the
fields are thoroughly eaten out, then
the hogs must have a large supply of
corn front Hie crib, or he falls away
rapidly and becomes an easy prey to
disease. Now, if the farmer would
fence off a small field and plant it iu
chufos or ground peas, and keep off
all stock until first or fifteenth of Jan
uary, or until his hogs were taken off
the fields, then turn them in and let
them have the full benefit of this
patch at the particular lime spoken of
above, (early spring) he would see
that his lings would lie carried
through their hard season to he better
at the end than at. the beginning.
lint I have spun out this letter
much longer than I at first intended,
I have already taken too much of vnnr
space.
I sec that the question as to who
will be our next representative
the National Congress is being agi
tated. From the present outlook it
would appear that there will be liut
little difficulty in liudiiig a mini wil
ling to he sacrifietl on Hie altar of liis
country in this particular case. At
the proper time wc will have more to
say on this subject. Respectfully,
Farmer.
We shall he glad to hear from
“Farmer” again.—News.
