Should a Citizen Borrow a Neigh
bor’s Paper t
We, of course, say no. Should a
person eat a neighbor’s bread, wear
his clothes, or use his horse, without
paying tor it? Your answer will he
no. Docs not your neighbor pay for
his paper as well as liis bread, clothes
auil horse? He certainly does. There
are many who read our paper who
do uo£ Contribute one cent to main
tain it, and occasionally we hear of
them nabbing the same, and walking
off with them. Now we don’t know
what they cal) this but we think it
looks like a case of kleptomania. Our
terras of subscription arc low, within
the reach of every one, and there is no
excuse for reading your neighbor’s
paper or taking it without leave or
license. If our paper is worth read
ing at all, it certainly is worth
II for six months, or 50 cents for three
months. Quit your had habits and
subscribe at once, that your conscience
may be easy.

Ill About Ibo Picnic si Hand &

Milford, Ga., April 24til, '77.
Editors Albany Xews:
The balmy spring sunshine, the
trees clothed in their holiday attire,
Umgeutle zephyrs liuleu with the in
cense of a thousand flowers, conspire
to fill tny heart with overflowing ex-
huberance, and seems as*if I had sud
denly been wafted to regions ethcrinl.
Yes, we huil thee, gentle-cved spring*
fqr thou bringestmethe halcyon days
of a newspaper correspondent’s life.
I hare already experienced a slight
touch of what is to be, aud now, if
you will excuse me 1 will tell you
something of Hie picnic at Hand &
Ration's mill, on Saturday tlie 20th
inst. Tite morning was ushered in
by an almost cloudless sky. Tlie sun
shone forth witli an unprecedented
gladness, ami with the mellow, tender
radiance so peculiar to our clime.—
AYith all these edifying influences is
it a wonder that hearts grew light,
that faces forsook their disconsolate
looks, and indexed Hie happy souls
within ! It was my misfortune to ar
rive late at the picnic redouvotiz,
yet when 1 diil get on the grounds,
the gay crowd was already indulg
ing in that best of all amusements,
dancing. A glance at the crowd
convinced me that it was the very
elite. 1 have never before seen such
an array of beautiful young ladies.—
A-h, m-e 1 Such heavenly eyes, such
rose-bud lips, knowing full well how
to enrapture a fellow’s soul, and send
him away limping, broken hearted.—
The gents, too, were handsome and
chivalrous, and handled themselves
with grace,
DINNER.
It was a good dinner, it was a din
ner that could be rolled under the
tongue for weeks at a time. Now
could be seen a long Hue of snowy
tablc-cloUis, and on them our mothers
were spreading everything that was
nice. Soon tiic task was completed
aud the sentiment “in for it, in for
it,” seemed to actuate all, and they
did iu for it. There was from a dish
of snap-beans up to strawberries and
cream, of course I possessed a partic
ular fondness for tlie berries, and those,
dear creatures, the ladies, issued me
out a respectable share. AVell, after
a long while tlie appetites of all were
satiated, and then dancing was re
sumed, aud tlie evening spent in dif
ferent amusements. To sum it up, 1
can say Hint Hie picnic was a good
success, and much credit is due the
handsome and enterprising who pro
jocted it.
the flint.
I would like to say something about
tlie improvement of tlie Flint river,
and what is due our Capt. Smith for
his noble efforts. AA’ill reserve that

AND the fair
1 would like to discuss, but must also
let that stay over for another time.—
The News has fairly gotten our peo
ple enthusiastic on the subject, and

H'e endorse the following, and
heartily congratulate Mr. Pendleton
in securing the services of Mr. John
ston:
“Tlie many friends of tlie above
named gentleman in this city will be
pleased to learn that he is now con
nected with Hiat spicy sheet the Val
dosta Times. Mr. Johnston is no nov
ice in the newspaper business, having
followed it for tlie last ten or fifteen
years. In 1872 he published and ed
ited tlie Southern Sun, in this city,
with an ability which made it one of
the most readable weeklies in the
State. Since then he has been at dif
ferent times connected witli the Sa
vannah yews the Albauy News and
the Democrat. He is beyond a doubt
one of the finest local and paragraph
writers in the State. And as we have
before stated he will prove a great
acquisition to the Times, and tlie pro
prietor may compliment himself on
having secured his services.”
Hoav not to Get Local News.
He came into our office, and alter
paying his subscription, 9aid:
“I guess von ran stop sending my
paper; I’ve jnst subscribed for a pa
per I need more.”
“Just so.” wc* returned.
He pulled a paper from his pocket
ami handed it to us for inspection.
It was a Philadelphia publication, be
ing nuutly printed, ornamented with
a handsomely engraved head, mid
containing about forty-eight columns
of reading matter.
“A very fair looking paper,” said
we. “But, my dear sir, tlo you find
much news concerning our county in
it?”
“No, lie didti’l know that ho had
fou ml any.” •
“Do you find anything concerning
our State?”
“No, be never did.”
And y’et he needed that sheet untie
than In* did his enmity paper.

The Southwest Georgia Industrial

Ho! pretty page with the dimpled
chin, that never hath known the bar
ber’s shear, go with your mooning by-
night and your dreaming by day, for
the ideal one is sure to turn up in the
fullness of time. The last case of man
ifest destiny is reported from the city
of Evansville. 1ml. A physician soon
after leading his bride to the altar,
wrote u letter to a college friend iu
northern Georgia, informing him of
what had happened, and advising
him, after the manner of a bridegroom,
to go and do likewise. The rising
young lawyer replied from Kewuan,
Georgia, that he would lie very hap
py to marry if he could only meet his
ideal; and" then followed a pen pic
ture of the woman for whom his soul
languished, all the mental charms
which found a place in iiis apprecia
tion being duly mentioned in the ilc-
seripliott. While passing along Main
street one day months afterwards, the
physician happened to see a young
lady of exquisite beauty ami rare in -
telligcnee, ami like a (lash he recog
nized her ns the embodiment of the
lawyer’s dream, lie made inquiries
ut once ami learned Hint she lived iu
Kentucky, and wns visiting some
friends iu Evansville: anil subsequent
ly lie procured, without her knowl
edge, one of her photographs aud sent
it to the promising young lawyer.—-
This gentleman was pleased with tlie
counterfeit presentment, and ac
knowledged by the next mail, that it
wits indeed the face of Ids ideal. Sub
sequently, he paid a visit to her fa
ther’s house in Owensboro, aud pre
sented letters of introduction from
Messrs. Stephens anil Hill; and after
a short courtship destiny had her way,
the tuarriHge ceremony being per
formed in the Baptist church of the
town lute last week.
