his closing words wore, if possihic,
better delivered than the opening. j
Another song, and master Johnnie j
Pattison took his place, anil witli a
composed ii oss and self-possession not
always found in public speakers, de
livered a most excel fen I speech.
These speeches doubtless were com
posed by friends who I'cel a great in-

trust the truths set forth found a
lodgement in the hearts oi Ihe many
young hearers. The speaker for the
Presbyterian church, nuothcr bright

Alter the 'penkiitjJ and singing all
were given free access to the grounds.
The command went forth to have fun,
a very great deal of it; and the com

is enough to sav that the spread was
in keeping with the picnic dinners
of Albany.
We chanced to lie' among some

thing like the following: “Von Meth-

The question was settled amicably
over the table, but we were at a loss
to decide who gained it. One decis

At tlie conclusion of tlie practice
the company was formed in line in
lYont of the dancing platform, and
Capt. J. T. Hester, in a neat and bcau-
tlftil manner presented Scargeut C.
A. Frank the red plume, as being the
best shot. Poor Louis Plonsky was
Car the second time the victim of
•^circumstances,” and had to bear oil'
the tin cup ns a lilting reward for Ids
execrable marksmanship. On ac
count however of his extreme modes
ty, Hie company generously spared
him the pain of a public presentation,
and L'npt. Wight kindly leading him
away by the hand and whispering
words of comfort and encourage
ment gave him the cup, which Plons
ky immediately threw into the river.
The shooting occupied the ent ire fore
noon, and after the presentations din
ner »yas announced.
The drum sounded to “full iu" at 3
o’clock precisely and the prize drill
commenced. It was most exciting
and hotly contested. Opt. A. C.
Westbrook, Lieutenants Woolfolk and
Tift were tho judges—and scanned
with eagle eye every movement of
muscle, and position of body, limb
and gun, at every command detecting
some mistake which caused one ol’
each ftmr to fall out. After a most
thorough drill lasting one hour and
a hall'. Dr. W. W. Bacon was de
clared the winner of the Gold Medal
for the best drilled, and Seargeut 11.
Brant recieved the leather medal, for
being the poorest, drilled man. P. T.
Hill was the last man to fall outjeav-l
Dr. Bacon the consciousness that his ,
victory had been indeed hard earned.:
Capt. Hester in his usual happy man- !
ncr presented the medals, alter which j
Modena’s splendid string band gave i
forth the sounds of music to which •
light hearts and tripping feet respond
ed, and the merry dancers whirled
away Hie hours until the lengthening
shadows closed upon the happy day
and brought to an end a most delight
ful occasion. ,
The picnic was decidedly one of
the most pleasant ever held in Al-
bau.v and doubtless added largely to
the popularity ol' the C'ompauy, under
whose auspices it was given. * * ♦
