ALBANY—TtlE FAIR—TIIF. CROWD, ETC.
Albany, May 22—Editors Momimj
News; County and district fairs are
multiplying all over the State. They
inftise ail enterprising spirit and
awaken an interest in agricultural
matters in the immediate vicinity -
Like everything else In the first fiimh
o#Pxis.enre, there is wonderful life
manifest, hut as the enterprise hi-
comes more settled in character the
fervor of youth passe* away and things
are conducted more soberly.
Albany isin its most attractive dress
now,and her enterprising citizens an*
all aglow with excitement over their
first fair. As If should he, every in
dividual feels a personal interest in
its success. There alw avs has been a
good deal of “gn-nhendativeness** in
this city, ami her commerce* 1 Iran-ac
tions have been on a larger scale than
any other town in Southwestern (Ieor
gia. Having two outlets to the sea.
she is favored with lower freights
than any other point, wliieh gives her
merchants a great advantage over
competing towns.
The fair, tinder the auspices of tin*
Southwest (ieorgia Industrial Asso
ciation, is a grand success. 11 is tin ir
first effort, and the season as well a**
fortune has smiled upon them and
their success is very gratifying. The
grounds are eligibly located, and for
the time allotted lire elegantly im
proved. The race track is in splen
did condition. The main hall is a su
perb building, and when once finish* d
will compare favorable with the im
provements on any fairground*. The
drive beside the river is lovely, ami
especially attractive to young people
for evening exercise, either w alkim*
or driving. Ami the whole ground-
arc susceptible of the highest cullur
and improvement.
The crowd commenced gathering
early, and during the day over t we::
ty-ouc hundred persons had pas-« d
tile gate. Ill the morning the Albany
Guards, thirty-five in mi hi her. under
command of Uapl. K. L. Wight, om*
of the best drilled officers in the Slat.*,
luarelied to the depot to receive th>*
Early County Guards, from Blake!\
The boys made a tine appearance ami
will be bard to distance in the eon
test to-day. An address of welcome
was delivered by Lieut. J. W. Wat
ters. of the Albany company, to th.
Early Comity Guards.
The train from Thomasvillc. crowd
ed to suffocation almost, arrived i -
swell the crowd, and twenty minute-
later the regular train from Savannah
came in with another large multitude
of pleasure seekers. At 2 o'clock p
in. the Macon train arrived, bringing
large additions to the moving ma- -
that now crowded the halls. Tie*
Macon Guards, twenty-live in mini
her, under command of Captain Ma
son, arrived hy the same train, ami
were met at the depot by the Album
and Early County Guards. Lott War
ren made an elegant speech, w elcom
iug the boys to the lio.-pitalitic' of tin*
city, as well as to their homes and
hearts, and to the sharp contest t«»
day*. At 2 o'clock thi- morning tin*
Baldw in Blues arrived ou the excur
sion train from Macon, twenty-one in
number, under command of Captain
Herty, well known in Middle Geor
gia. They' came to enter the content,
and the boys will have to step livch
if Millcdgeville doe- not carry off tl.<
laurels.
There are quite a number ot art*
clea ou exhibition that do not coin.*
under the department of horticulture,
although some of them indirectly Re
connected with it. Among them :n.
two “fruit dryers,” exhibited by on:
wide-awake friend. S. T. .lenkiti*., of
the Southern Enterprise, of Atlaiim
The first is the “Granger Dryer.*
made entirely out of tin. and i- easily

The vegetable di-play excel- any
thing of the kind Unit 1 have ever
seen, and 1 doubt if it. will ever be
surpassed ill this section again. Tin*
largc-l heel was raised by L. E. Welch,
the President of tin* Association,
weighing ten ami a half pounds.—
There were several other.- weighing
nine and ten pounds. Out* friend !Yr-
ham, of the tjmtuian Free Press, took
the premium on the best lot of cab
bage, three in iiiiinbei*, weighing each
twenty pounds.
Mark Smith had rust-proof oat-
seven feet in height, and there were
some of the tiuc.-l specimen- of w leal
ever raised on exhibition here. The
foolish delii.-ion that cereals cannot
he raised in this section is entirely
dissipated. The truth is, we can rai-c
everything that is needed hy a little
patience and work. There \v:».- a di--
play of lioiiie-tnade bacon on iIn-
ground yesterday that would have
none credit to Teime^-ec or Ken
tucky.
'The ladies of Albany, alway- noted
Ibr every good word and work, look
possession of the dining department
and run il in the benevolent in!erc-i
of the town. They divide the net prof
its between the variou- clmrchc- of
the city. Yesterday they look in about
four hundred dollars.
'There were two race*, on yc.-terday,
which have been reported. Tin* boat
rare was .somew hat frii-lraicd by om*
of the boat- breaking her rudder,
leaving the victory to Annie Loni>c
an easy matter. This closed the day*-

department were paintings that would
have done credit to professional art

in execution. Mrs. Silencer, a lady
of maturcr years and larger experi

as the most finished piece of work in

George” would rank among the first
works in most any of the art galleries
in the larger cities. There were oth
er individual pictures of rare beauty.
There was om* peculiarly attractive
to ('mint Gorman. It was executed
by a little girl of nine years of age.—
It. was a loving swain standing under
the window of his sweetheart* Site

There were several magnificent dis
plays from the merchants. Messrs

In tin* Lome manufacturing depart

Mr. J. K. King took the premium

that was ripe ami of large size. This
fruit, he claimed, could he ripened

'There was considerable competition

The grand occasion of the day was

pivot on which all this country rests
commercially. The advantages are:
a central position, three railroads to

the river is navigable to the Gulf of
Mexico. Albany has a larger popu

arc a number of counties lying con

Besides, tlie display in the several de-

The Southwest Georgia Industrial
Association has, by the grand nuccess
oi her first Fair, raised expectations
as in its future, that some of its friends
tear will he hard to meet. We,our-

keep wide awake, energetic and con-

ture the expectations she has raised so

THE FAIR AT ALBANY.
We were prevented by private
bn-incss from attending this fair on
Tuesday, but arrived there about J*
' lock Wednesday, and found a
crowd around tlie gates awaiting ad-
otd a still larger crowd iu-
mi-sion and a still larger
-idc. Fu lling through the crowd w*
found ourselves inside the enclosure
and close to the main exhibition
building. This building is one of the
finest of the kind we have ever seen,
and is admirably suited for the pur
pose for which it was built. Enter
ing. *ve found a fine display of vege
table- and tVnits, pictures, needle
work, merchants' displays, carriage-
and buggies, making in all a very
handsome show, and reminding us dl
the displays usually made at the fall
fairs in the State.
The race track was the great point
of interest for the majority. Here a
trotting race was being decided, and
shortly afterwards the military drill
came off. The Macon Guards, Cant.
Mason, Baldwin Blues, Capt R. E.
Herty, aud Albany Guards, Capt E.
L. Wight, were the contesting com
panies. The Early County Guardi-
were present, but declined to enter
the contest. Owing to the heatof the
day, only a twenty minutes’ drill war
required, and each company was to
perform only such evolutions as they
preferred. The drilling was all good,
but ii was soon seen that the Baldwin
Blues were ahead of the Macon
Guards, and the contest was between
them ami the Albany Guards. The
Judges ileeided that under the rule-
the Albany Guards were entitled to
the prize and so awarded, though the
Blues executed many movements not
attempted hy the Guards, and did
splendidly, especially in their double
lime movements.
Horse-racing, trotting and boal-
racing served to pass away the bal
ance of the day. Tlie only drawback
to the fair was the extreme heat. Th*
rare track is one of the finest in the
State, if not the very best. There are
beautiful drives near the river. The
a.-eommodations for stock are splen
did. ami all tliHt was needed was a
little -hade around the main build
ing-. The fair was a complete suc
