re|)re8Ctil their interests in Congress.”
This is a fact that lias escaped the at
tention of the public. Our impres
sion was that In? was nominated just
as other men have been nominated,
and that he cheerfully accepted the
honor conferred. We had also
tlioiiKht that in the cot: vent ion of 1.8-
“I. so far from bcin^ “asked to con
sent to the presentation of Ids name
to the people of the district as ti lit
person to represent their interests in
Congress,” lie was brought in as a
compromise candidate, and only nom
inated alter a day and night had
been spent in fruitless hulloting. It
is evident, however, from Mr. Ste
phens’ letter, that we were mistaken,
and that it lias taken the most urgent
jicrS'iiasion to get him to accept a nom
ination from the Democracy of the
district. Mr. Stephens, in his letter,
falls into the subjunctive mood and
says if the eorventioii which is lo
meet at Thomson attempt* to rule him
out of the Democratic party hern use
of hi* te’egram lie shall consider them
an irresponsible faction of trickstcr
nnd run for Congress as ail Independ
ent. He knows very well that the
convention will not do any such
tiling, lie knows e<|ttally well that
convent bills have not such power and
have rever attempted to exercise it.
Mr. Stephens* letter is simply a deli
anee to the Democracy of the Figlifli
district. He says to them, in sub
stance. **I am* a Democrat, but /
alone know* what Democracy is. I
will accept your nomination, hut
you give it to’ some one else I shall
run anyhow.”
In all kindness and candor, we
think Mr. Stephens lias made a uiis-
tike. We have borne testimony
his integrity, to his unblemished pub
lic amt private character. We liavr
often differed with him, hut never
questioned his motives. With mod
esty we express the opinion that flu
people of this district have agreed
with us in what we have done. I»cc-
ogni/.ing his honesty, the people have
allowed him the widest latitude ol
opinion. With one voire they con
demned Ids apologies for (• rant, the
tyrant, and Ids defense of Durrcll.
the unjust Judge, but they did not
attempt to humiliate him on that ac
count. He was elected and re-elect
ed to Congress while nine-tenths of
the voters repudiated and condemned
his course. They* do not now agree
with him that tin* exposures of fra ml
ami perjuries means revolution ami
•‘Mexieani/ation.** They* do not
think that it isa crime t«»^»rove crime,
but they* are perfectly willing to til-
low him to form and express Ids own
peculiar opinion upon the subject,
because they have confidence in Ids
integrity if they do not subscribe to
his infaiihility. Hut mistaking their
magiiainnity for fear lie comes before
them now with a defiance—a defiance
