San Francisco, .July 15.—A Walla
Walla dispatch relating the Miles
right with the hostilcs at tlx- I’lnutiila
reservation says the troop- numbered
iOO regulars. The fight occureil about
eight ill the morning, within a short
distance «f Cay use station. The sav
ages unrulier between 4.0011 and 5.000.
Getting the men into position. Miles
opened tire. The hostilcs returned it
without effert, neither side sustaining
any injury. This was continued with
out intermission until 12o'clock wlx-n
the Indians attempted to charge Mile's
lines but were driven off. being una
ble to stand the fire front tlie howit
zer.
In a charge the Indians sustained
considerable loss, those present c-ii-
inating the dead at 15. Miles' casual
ties consist of two wounded, one in
the leg. Shortly after one o'clock the
Indians fell liack towards tlie inoitii-
tains. This is the first time this cam
paign the liostiles have attempted t
■barge and shows that they are driv-
t-n to desperation. During the whole
of tlie fight they shot wild. Miles'
ibjeet, in view of the overwhelming
numbers against him. was to prevent
the advance of the hostiles.and if pos
sible to bold them in check till rein
forced. This lie did, although a fool
and the savages were well mounted.
During Friday the Indians complet
'd the destruction of C'aynse station,
which, on the day previous they par
tially destroyed. It is feared Aleaeli-
.imes has met a similar fate. Among
the interested sjiectators of the Miles'
light were a large number of 1'iusitil-
la who took sides with neither party
but appeared to relish the s|x>rt.
