The Seeotttl District.
Saturday next is an important po
litical day in the Second Cougression-
District. The counties of Unn-
dolplr, Terrell, Clay and Iterator will
Irolil conventions am) select delegates,
and (heir action will prolmbly decide
the question as to who will be the
nominee of the Democracy of Hie Sce-
ond. With the present outlook we are
of the opinion that only one ballot

will result in the nomination of Win.
K_ Smith.
In addition to the votes already se
cured by tho people for Oapt. Smith,
we have pretty positive assurance that
Terrell and Clay will both send dele
gates friendly to his nomination.
This will positively secure for hint
twenty-fire rotes, and leaves only one
and two-thirds to be secured fVoni the
remaining counties. With such a
close number It is evident Uutt Cnpt.
Smith is the choice of the Democracy
of the Second, and nothing but polit
ical trickery can poaibly defeat him.
. Cheap Money Wanted.
What the South mostly needs just
at thU.tiiuq is cheap money. The
limited bank facilities in litis section
since the war, the high rates of inter
est and tho’ oppression practiced by
the few holders of money, have done
more to retard, prosperity than all
eiso combined. There has not been
ufficicnk encouragement for labor—
hencoa laek of proper development.
In viow of these facts, it scents to
us that the State Bank scheme should
be re-established. Farmers, maim
facturers and merchants want ai
abundance of chep money, which will
fifeicr andjgustaiu all of their indus
tries. They want arTTnsiitution that
will loan them money at seven per
cent. Interest. Then every acre of
idle land will be placed under culti
vation and every wheel will 1>c put
in motion. A writer says: •‘Give
the farmer- means to pay their hands
promptly every Saturday night until
the crops are gathered, and you will
bear no more of ‘farming on shares*
or of unmanageable labor. The great
producing'classes never have been
nor never will he assisted in this way
by national bank monopolists. They
eannotgiyo the collaterals required
and if they could, the rate of interest
is too high and the loan is loo short
to do them any good. Give us cheap
money—money so cheap that all in

Tiifa question is just now puzzling
the brain of a good many of our
zenz. For ourselves wc can only say
that we think that there will be, and
one that it will he uo little trouble to
beat, if Hon. W. E. Smith is liomma
ted by the Camilla convention. Now.
gentlemen, do not cry out against us.
and say that we are trying to prevent
“Tele” Smith’s nomination. We are
not working for Hurt end, hut for the
liest interest of tbe party. The gen-
i we have reference to lives in
this end of tbe district, and from some
cause, we know not what, seems to
feel that be ought to run if Smith is
nominated. He might run any wav.
no matter who fa nominated, but wc
think.be fa almost certain to do so if
Smith is. We do not believe lie
conld heat Capt. Smith, others, how
ever,do think he can, and wc do not
•retend to be infallible by any means.
Ve say this because we believe it to
be the truth, and we believe the dele
gates to Camilla should know it be-
for they act. We have nothing more
to say.—Southern Enterprise.
That threat wont scare anybody off
the track. ' It has been tried before,
but the people are going to nominate
Captain Smith and elect him. Col,
Seward's name was used before, and
he denounced the report as false.—
This time its a “dark horse.” Why
dont the Enterprise give ,us the name
and condemn the man who would
thus seek to crush the Democratic
party of tho Second ?
The Straggle for the Forty-Sixth
Congress.
Tbe New York Journal or Commerce
ijs : -The contest for tbe control of the
Forty-sixth Congress, will be as usual,
desperate. Tbe Republicans have made
extraordinary exertions to raise money for
overcoming, in close districts, that adverse
msjorily of thirteen in the present Con-
grew. Republican papers boastfully as
sert that a large campaign fhnd bas to on
made and paid all through the Federal
offices a hold clerk here and there ob
jecting—but the great boot of government
officials paying up readily, because they
know civil service reform to be a farce,
and Uieir tenure of place to depend on
their giving. Tbe Democrats, having no
<ucb mine to work, are poor in campaign
muds. Tlmlr candidates are obliged to
nse their own money, of which they are
not flash, their *-ssvings” having been
•mall at a session in which the fear of
public wrath sihI rejection at the polls
-•impelled them to vote generally against
subsidies."
The reliance on money to carry the
Congressional elections is anything hut
complimentary to the intelligence and pa
friolism of the American people. When
it comes to tie the case (lint in our popu
lur elections victory to on tlie tide of tlic
the big pockelbook. It will lie lime to
cease boosting of our republican system of
aelf-goveruineut, dispense with elections
by the people, and put the offices of Hie
country np to tbe highest bidder- II by
(be adoption of such n system we wonld
ee*se to be freemen, wc would ml least se
cure tbe tranquility ol tlie country and
lighten Uie burdens ol taxation.
