The first great principle underlying
Democratic success in tins country is
Ao*l<«Atiox.' It, is the bulwark of
our safety from Radicalism, and that
man or set of men who wonM lift a
voice for the sake of personal favor
itism or personal ambition in antag*
ouism to this principle, has not the
good of his people or country at heart
We have expressed our desire for
the re-nomination of Hon. Wm. K.
Smith, from no licrsounl motive what
ever. True, he is our personal friend.
So are other gcutlcmcn whose names
have been mentioned in this connec
tion. Bui Captain Smith’s claims
upon onr people are ot • higher na
ture. ' llis great services in the past,
unquestioned patriotism, ability ami
experience make him the man for i In-
hour, a leader, if such lie again be
comes, who will hurl Radicalism to
the wall, with that force and Ihorugh-
ness which has already made him the
terror of the opposing faction. We
have believed, and now believe that
he is first choice of his party, and with
these facts in view, it is our earnest
hope that the banner will again be
placed in his hands.
Should, however, the delegates as
sembled at Camilla on the 5th, deem
some oilier man more available, more
able, or better qualified generally for
the task, the i<coplc of Dougherty
will join their sister counties in a
bold, strenous light for victory, anti
Win. E. Smith will lie found ready,
willing, yea. anxious to go with them.

horse,” in the sense in which it is used,
we can say, without hesitation, if he
is “tied out” around here we are not
nware of it, and onr facilities for
knowing are uni Imd. Secondly:
The man, whoever lie may he, hail
from whatever county he "tiiav, who
undertakes to “n-ttsh out the Deinu-

correct likeness of himself taken

would hardly know him when he
mlled up nt the cud of the course,
icing run through a threshing ma
chine or tackling a circular saw would
lie pleasant recreation to it. We have
implicit faith in the rank and file of
the Democratic pnrtv ill this district.

know that the Democrats of Thomas

that such is the case in other counties.
The |K>oplc only want n fair and

thru iiiiih-ontcnts. soreheads aud In
dependents may as well step to the
rear. For there they will go. The
editor of the Xf.ws construes the ar
ticle in tho Enterprise as a threat.
aptain llnnscll needs no dufeucc at
our hands on this point; ho is compe
tent to explain himself, but wo have
no idea that he intended the language
to convey the idea ofa “threat.” Nay,
we know that he would not place the
party in such an attitude, muj wc
take'the responsibility of utterly dis
claiming, in behalf of the party here,
iny such views. As the editors of the
News have placed the Democracy of
this county in a "threatening” atti
tude, upon what appears to us to be
a constrained construction of lan
guage. we hope he will do them the
justice to note our disclaimer. We
do not like to sec Thomas county-
placed in a false position, aud she
shall not he—if we can prevent it.
The “disclaimer” abovo is front the
last issue of the Thomasvillc Times.
Wc reproduce it with pleasure, and
pronounce it a fiat contradiction of
the article which appeared in the En
terprise. Tbe Times misconstrues ns
altogether. Our last reference to a
•lark horse,” was au equine from the
Independent stock, and had uo ref
erence whatever to Die Democracy
of Thomas. The Enterprise seemed
to know that a certain person would
run independent upon certain ronliti
gencies, and then withheld the name
of that person
Many were lead to believe that
the prospective Independent can
didate was lion. .I. L. Seward. His
name was circulated several weeks
ago in this section, by a parly or par
ties opposed to Die nomination of
Captain Smith; hut Col. Seward im
mediately disclaimed any thought of
such an attempt to disorganize the
Democratic party in the Second. Now,
it seems to us, that even those Demo
crats who arc opposed to the retiont-
ination of Captain Smith should
openly and continually fight against
anything like opposition to the party
As to the editor of Die Enterprise,
wc know hint well. He is as true as
steel, an unflinching Democrat and
sound man, but wc do think our
friend commits an error in cloaking
danger which possibly confronts his
party. This, and nothing more.
We have nothing whatever to say
against the Democracy of Thomas
county. They did as much to redeem
the District from Radicalism as the
Democrats of any other county, and
will ever deserve a high position in
the esteem of us all.
The Times editor need not be
alarmed about the two-thirds rule.
Wc sec his point plainly. That it will
prevail nt the Camilla Convention
there can be no doubt. It will not do
to depart from the usage nt this time,
and none will favor it more strenu
ously ttiau the fronds of Captain
Smith.

Memphis, August 2o.—The yellow
fever record to-day shows a decrease
in the number of new rases compared
with yesterday. Sixty-one are report
ed up to 6 o’clock this evening. The
death list Is the largest of any day
since the fever made its appearance,
the undertakers reporting twenty-six
interments. There is a scarcity of
nurses. The Howards and other re
lief organizations telegraphed to Mo
bile, Ala., and other points for them.
Members of the different associa
tions arc doing a noble work, in
striking contrast to the action of a
few people who have deserted friends
and rclntivcs in their distress.
Instances are known cf parents de
serting children and of children their
parents. The wife and children of
prominent cittzcit were taken with
the fever during his absence. He was
telegraphed for and replied, “Take
care of my family.” His wife is dead,
and to-day the children were convey
ed to tho city hospital. One has since
died.
Gen. W. J. Smith is reported very-

this morning. Alexander Waddell,
in charge of the Albany street dis

of the association in charge of the

The fever is spreading to an alarming
extent among the negroes. One case
was brought from camp Joe Williams
this morning, and fears are entertain

among the refugees there. The work
of depopulating the city continues.
New Orleans, August 26. — Dr,
Warren Stone, who returned from

from the Howard association.
The Picayune says: By a private
letter it is learned that the fever at
Plaquemine, Iberville Parish, lias
largely increased. The people are
sadly affiicted. They suffer chiefly
from Die want of physicians anil
nurses, and Diosc who are in good
health are mainly employed in taking
care of the sick.

North is something not easily to be
forgotten. On every side wc hear of
the most noble efforts being made to
raise contributions in aid of the af

Mr. O? V. Shearer, a native of Al

died of the i'ever to-day. The deaths
to-day include fourteen children un

The Howard Association received
the following dispatches to-day from
Grenada:
“For heaven’s sake send a few
