TEXT BOOKS FOR fRE SCHOOLS Of
DOOnilERTF.
The committee appointed by the
Board of Education of Dougherty
county, to unite with the tenchers of
the private schools of the city of Al
bany, and prescribe a uniform sys
tem of eligible text hooks for use in
the public schools of said county, held
a meeting for that purpose on the
evening of the 23rd inst.
Present, Messrs. Welch and Mitch
ell, Dr. Cromwell, Mrs. Thornbury
from thp public schools, and
Messrs. Cheves and Lee of the Albany
Male High School. ,
Mr. L. E. Welch was called to the
Chair, and D. G. Lee requested to act
as Secretary. The body then proceed
ed to business.
It was decided that the duty of the
committee was confined to the adop
tion of works on those branches alone,
which are required to be taught in
the public schools; hence all others
were left out of consideration, as not
pertaining to the province of this
committee.
It was considered wise to approve,
so far as it was consistent and not
emphatically objectionable, thoae
books which already are known to
have a decided prevalence in the
schools of Albany and the county—
consequently, several positively desi
rable substitutions and innovations
were left unmade, which would hare
been made could the circumstances
have been disregarded.
The following books and series
were suggested, discussed and adopt
ed separately:
Webster’s Spellers, with Bailey’s
Scholar's Companion for advanced
classes.
McGuffey’s series of Readers ; Pay-
son’s Penmanship; Sanford’s series
of Arithmetics; Harvey’s English
Grammer, or Smith’s for beginners.
Montelth’s series of Geographies,
except his Physical Geography to
which Maury’s Physical Geography
was esteemed superior, and therefore
adopted.
Quackeuboss’ Composition and
Rhetoric; Stephens' IT. S. History;
Gow’s “Morals and Manner” was
highly recommended for introduction
into the schools, hut was not adopted
for the public schools.
The use of these hooks is to he ob
ligatory upon the free schools, while
it is hoped that the private schools
will adopt them so far as they go.
With reference to one of the above
named books, Smith’s Grammar, it is
l egation of colored peo- j hut justice to state that many serious
objections were raised to it. Thi-
book was tlioroughly discussed, and
many of its glaring errors and palpa
ble imperfections were exposed to
view ; hut it was decided that the ure
of it for beginners was permissible;
and therefore its use was not prohib
ited. Besides, it has some things to
recommend it, and this is the apolo-
I gy for its toleration.
I The following preamble and reso-
atleulion, ami when an invitation i lutions offered by Mr. Cheves were
was extended to all who wished to | adopted :
