It was our pleasure to attend the
Convention of the Second t'onffros-
s'onal District, which was licld at (Ca
milla on Thursday last. As we an
ticipated the choice of the Conven
tion fell npon Wsi. K. Smith, and he
is now the regular standard-hearer of
Itcmocraev. The proceedings of the
Convention arc published on our tirst
page, in which our readers will olr-
s -rvo that twenty-four and one-third
votes stood solid for Captain Smith
through many linllots, and that after
the eightieth lie was nominated bv ac-
lamntion. Upon this ballot, lion.
It F. Crittendon, of Randolph conn
ect the Ileniocracy of the Second
eternally bury Indepeudentism; and
let it not ttjJjc root in the Second.
lSig-Maii-Witliout-a-Xame is about

will cal big heap nigger, as well as
white trash.
lierricn. the banner county, is ex-
j(cell'd to roll up one thousand Demo
cratic majority in Xovemltcr, and
she is hound to do it.
lion. Wrn. E. Smith will make a
Ihnmugli canvass of the District, and
will lie assisted by several of the most
able men in the State.
F.'ilonism is a more appropriate
title than Independency. It was that
I5ev. gentleman who sowed the I'(la
in the monn .iins.
Voting against Democracy for a
dough-faced political bummer, i.-
worsc than voting for a -.raight-out
hold ISepnbliran. Take no leap In
the dark.
Why don’t Colonel Seward run a-
a Xational <« recti backer? That would
In 1 a good way to ilodge self; and
would afford the very best joke of
the season.
I.clier- from It'rrien, Worth.Ilrook-
and Lowndes comities give us full
a -urainv that lion. Win. E. Smith
will Ik* enthusiastically supported in
those counties.
t 'minty of Worth, prepare yourself.
Y .11 have a tremendous load to carry
in Xoveiulier. Major Harris lias
promised 10Ut>Democratic votes from
your people.
Our remarks concerning the candi
dacy of Mr. Seward arc based upon
the remarks of the Thomasvillc
Times, 11(1011 the subject, to be found
iu another column.
Inde(M>ndent candidates are thick
and fast in Georgia. There is one in
the First, one in the Second, one in
the Seventh and one in the Ninth
District. Who is to blame ? Felton-
fsnt
The colored people will support
Hon. Win. E. Smith for Congress, lic-
eause they know him to lie honest in
all liis dealing, au open, straight-out
Democrat, and one who has never de
ceived them.
Who is to blame for the Independ
ent candidacy ? Wm. H. Felton, of
the Seventh District and his reckless
followers. Hell yawns for those who
would thus seek to destroy the liber
ties of the people.
Those who suppose that the De
mocracy of the lower counties is go
ing to be lukewarm in this campaign
are mistaken. They will run a light
ning schedule against James L Sew
ard and for Wm. E. Smith.
lion. Sam. J. Randall has been
prominently spoken of as a candidate
for the Presidency in 1880. It was
the tactics of this same Sam. J. Ran
dall that overthrew the Force Kill
which was so strongly urged by R. II.
Whiteley and his like.
Col. Carey W. Styles, who is now a
citizen of the Seventh Congressional
District, has been interviewed by a
reporter of the Constitution, and
gives it as his opinion, from a careful
survey of the field, that Judge Lester
will beat the Independent Felton by
at lead 800 majority.

Wasn't J»*. I- Seward once a Loy
al Leaguer, ami didn't lie support
(Irani for President ? Was he no! af
terwards a rampant Democrat? Wo
merely put these questions for the
cofi-ideration of Mr. Seward, Repub
licans ami Iteinocrats.
It’s a hard matter for one to decide
who or what our Independent candi
date i-. Is lie a white-washed Demo
crat, black-washed Republican, or
mixture of both. Mongrel—that's the
word. Who is there to join the mon
grel party.
Somebody sail!, the other day, that
Seward would carry Colquitt comity.
The idea of the roek-rihlied Dctnoc
rnry of that noble little county al
lowing it* fair name to he tints pros
tituted is preposterous. Colquitt will
give Capt. .Smith a tremendous ma
jority.
The First District has au liidcpcnd-
ent-tireenliack-Labor Humbug can
didate, ill the person of one E. A
Corker, of Hurke county. Fcltoni-m
is tints doing its dirty work, hut
Corker will lie eorke.it for good, and
laid on the shelf in November. Tin-
true |ieople of the First are going to
,ote for lion. John C. Nieholls.
•gainst fifteen and two-thirds divided
against itself fairly indicated that the
gentleman sustained by the large ma
jority, was, without doubt, the choice
of tho people; yet the opposition had
personal ami sectional preference,
and commanded the respect of the
majority. Not one wool was uttered
against the record of Captain Smith,
not a wont against him personally or
politically, ami when the time came
for the final vote the highest eulogies
were pronounced by those who had
been his opponent-. The motion to
nominate him by acclamation was
made by Hon. Wm. O. Fleming, of
Decatur.
No political intrigue was practiced
by either side. After nominations
were made, and until a great number
of ballots ha<l been announced, not a
wort! was uttered in debate—and
pccch-making consumed but little
time of the day.
That a deep satisfaction prevails
throughout the Distrtct, and the
utmost harmony and good will, there
can be no doubt. Democracy in the
Second is solid and united.
Hon. Jas. L. Seward has announced
himself an Independent candidate.—
We sorrow for the old man. Win. E.
Smith, supported by the patriotism of
the District, will drive him to the
walls in November, and he will tint-
lic stripped of all the glory with
which some of his past services may
have clothed him. James I- Sew
ard's record, vascillating ns it is, can
not win for him the support of cither
a true Democrat or a sound Repub
lican.
Democracy of the Second, lie true
to your party, true to your standard-
bearer, true to yourselves, and vic
tory will again he proclaimed for
you on the Ctli of November.
Congratulatory Dispatch.
The following congratulatory dis
patch was received a few days ago:
Washington. D.C.,Sep.7,1878.
Hon. IVm. E. Smith, Albany, On :
Let me offer you inv sincerest con
gratulations.
Sam. J. Randall.
The above, in onr opinion, speaks
millions for Tctc Smith. It speaks
from headquarters as to liis worth
and standing, and not a mother’s son
of us must fail to give him the big
gest majority he ever had before.
Hon. Wm Harrison, of Quitman.
The Camilla Convention was very
fortunate in its selection of a presi
ding officer, in the person of Hon.
Wm. Ilarrisou, of the county ofQuil-
man. Colonel Harrison is an able,
tignified gentleman, a member of the
State Senate, anil a legislator of cx-
lierience. He made many friends by
his earnest appeals for harmony at
Camilla, winning the admiration of
even those who did not agree with
idm in his preference. He was
trong supporter of Capt. Smith.
The Legislature of Georgia will
elect eight judges of the Superior
Court, the successor of Judge Kiildoo,
of the 1’ataula circuit, being one.—
For the position soon to he vacated,
we are emphatically and unequivo
cally in favor of Col. L. C. Hoyle, of
Dawson. He needs no recommenda
tion ; he is too well and favorably
fciiown for that, and not alone by the
people of the Patau la circuit hut by
lieoplc of other sections of our State.
