QUESTION'S OF IMPORTANCE BETWEEN
STEWARD AND HIS PASTOR.
Steward.—Brother Dowdell, my atteuliou was
called to au article in the newspaper, coocerninK
something you had saki about the colored Murphys,
Pastor. You did perfectly right, for not a word
r it D true.
S. Have you seen the paper ?
P. I have read the whole thing.
S. What did you think of it?
P. 1 thought very little of it myself, from the
fact that I could see neither bead nor tail to it, and
there was no name attached to It, 1 look upon
the Information given the editor a* being the work
of some base pal true n.
S. Why do you sup|H>se they used your name in
such a manner?
P. That is a question to bo answered by the third
person. I see no propriety in such, but a total dis
regard of all right and justice.
S. It is said that you refused lo allow the tem
perance meeting to lie held iu your church: Is that
Not a word of it is true. Some white geulle-
mentioued the matter to me. I heartily con
curred with them, aud promised to co-work with
them in the great temperance movement.
S. Did you write to the secretary to take the
a pen to
1 a aec-
. . oue.
What about the split iu the church?
1 do not apprehend the least dancer. There
j cause for a Methodisl Church splitting. We
do not compel members lo remain in our church
who wish to connect themselves with another. We
generally give them leiters ol dismission. Moreover
the words splitting*-* church are words in tlie^Er.glish
language without a meaniug, and if this is not true,
theu the word of God is a failure, for Christ speak
ing to Peter, declared that upon thin rock He would
build His church (meaning Peter's tablet) aud the
gates of hell should never prevail against ii. In
this Christ had reference to men in their wicked
counsels, and also to churrh splitting. Who are we
to believe in this case? I shall take the advice of
the apostle: Let God be true and every man a liar.
8. What about your discipline being agaiust tem
perance 7
P. My discipline is in favor of temperance, has a
rule laid down in it and the rule reads as follows:
Drunkenness, or drinking ot spirituous liquors, is
forbidden (unless in cases of necessity,) and a mem
ber shall not taste spirituous liquors, or dram of any
kiud, unless prescrihsd by a physician.
So I Inquired of one Washington, a theologist, to
know if soum of my members hail not joined the
temperance society at his church ? He said they
hail. 1 then said lo him that when those white
gentlemen organized the society in my church, I ex-
itected to have my members all to enroll their names
in my owu church, as those gentlemen promised to
organize the society in all the churches, aud the sa
fety had no rules of restriction, and 1 hare. I did
try my Members i
ollemv whicli my uiscip
line required me to do. So tlie whole of this com-
|M>undcomplication must have originated from till*,
and I pronounce tlie whole matter as rurnishtM to
the AdtrrtiM-r, and published therein, as a willful
aud malicious falsehood.
