The FniW Next Week.
Ou Tunsday next the first Fall Fair
if the Southwest Georgia Iudqftrinl
Association o|ieiis. and continues fire
day*. Upon the success of this grand
effort to show forth the resource* of
oursoclion. and entertain and please
isitors, depends the future prosperi
ty of this Association if in any way
>nr jieoplc fall off from the high an
ticipation* produced by tlie success of
the spring exhibition, it will, wc leaf,
prove a serious blow to the progress
of tbo enterprise.
But we have no roasou to fear dis
aster. Our people seem wide-awake,
active, and determined to carry out
to the very letter that great purpose
which inspired their energies in the
beginning—to build up Southwest
Georgia, by advertising the resources
of our section.
Each citizen of Albany, ami of
Dougherty and surrounding countir
ha* a duty to perforin next week, of
paramount importance to themselves.
I'hev must stretch out the hand of cor
diality, liberality and Georgia's pro
verbial iHispitalilv to those front a
distance who may honor us witli
their presence, it is well known ami
appreciated abroad that Alliany is a
pleasant place to visit. Let us not
lose tlio prestige, but be active ami
vigilant on this occasion to uphold
our good name.
There is promise of a large attend
ance at this Fair. Numerous letters
and other communications received
oy tlie officers of tlie Association and
oy many of our citizens warn ns to
lie ready for a crowd. Are our |
pie ready to receive them ? If not,
golow.u'k at ouee and get ready.
I’m vonr n hole strength in tlie good
work of making successful an exhibi

name of vonr citv and section.

lion. Wm. E. Smith addresses the
following open letter to Mr. C. II. C.
Willinglmu. editor of the t'artcrs-

Smith's) position in regard to politi
cal all'airs ill the Seventh. It explnina
itself:
Albany, Ga., Oel. 7, 1878.
//. C. Willingham, Enq„ Editor
ree Ere»*, Cartertritte, On.: Sir -
Several newspaper paragraps in re
tard to my political relation to Dr.
Kelton have fallen under my notice.
My silence during their circulation
might iudticc wrong impressions as
to my real iHwitlou. I do not have
the vanity to suppose that anything
said by me would influence the good
people of tlie Seventh iu their choice
of a Congressman, and therefore have
-aid nothing and done nothing to
efleet such a purpose, lint I do not
hesitate to say that I endorse, in tlio
main, tlie course of Dr. Felton in
Congress, and did desire Ids return
to the tilth Congress. He knows that
I would have been pleased to Inivo
n him at the Itend of the organized
Democracy of his district; lint m
fudge I-ester Inis been selected by I
■.invention of the parly as tlie re'gn
lar nominee, this act siioubl bind the
party, as it binds me. Wlintever my
ablation ami admiration of Dr. Kef-
ton as a man and legislator, I prefer
the regular nominee against any In
ilr/irtuleiit.
Our people owe their present happy
and peaceful political condition to the
wlidity and unity of the Democratic
party, ami I am for party organiza
tion ami against parly anarchy.
I’cspcrlfully, Wm. K. Smith.
A grand fete will come oil' in Paris
on Tuesday next for the benefit of
the yellow fever sufferers. It will
take place at tlie Trocatlorc palace,
and will be of huge dimensions.
The cotton report for September is
very favorable, in Georgia the av
erage i- placed at cighty-oue per rci
in Texas it is one hundred and one.
Georgia's cotton crop is placed low
est except one other State, South Car
olina, wlibb is eighty. Tlie dry
weather did most of tlie damage. In
soiui' to-.lilies the boll worm, the
army worm mid tlie caterpillar have
.leen destructive. The prospect
bn crop, ou the whole, is umisiially
favorable. It has passed its critical
period, and still shows high vitality
to meet the vicissitudes of autiimu
flic decline in condition is not greater
than usual: it was scarce to lie ex
pected that the condition would ini
prove in August. Tlie final outturn,
however, is still a matter of specula
tion, dependent upon many contin
gencies. If the season of growtli and
gathering should he as prolonged as
last year, the yield will be greatly in
creased, equaling, if not exceeding,
the great ante-bellum crops.

Savannah is fairly flooded with
cotton, if we may use the term. Cot-
tou presses are running night and

The New York Tribune thinks s
Republican will lie elected to Con
gress from tlie fourth district ot this
State. The Tribune"a horoscope i* ot
fault. A Simon-pure dyed-in-the-
wool Democrat is going.
Gen. Gordon is in the Held in the
interest of Democracy. We are glad
oi it. The mites that he is sounding
reverberate over tlie whole State—
echo against the mountain sides, play
with the ocean breezes, and dangle
with the wire-grass.
IVr hope to see a good delegation
from all of our counties at the ap
prom-hing Fair. We again reiterate,
it is as mnrh for their benefit as it is
for onr county, ami we all hare just

The annual term of (tie United

of unusual importance, some of which
will be given precedence and argued
at once. Among the latter i» a case

The track is now clear, and rertain
it is that no one will, at this late day-
enter the race with any hope of even
keeping in sight of Hon. Wm. E.
Smith. But there is no telling what
efforts the Radical leaders may make
to break the Democratic ranks that
they may ultimately regain the ns-
cendency in tlie second district. It
therefore behooves tlie Democracy to
take Ben Hill’s advice, “not to break
ranks." By organized eflort this dis
trict was redeemed from tlie rule of
ignorance, and only by organized
effort can it be retained. That -eter
nal vigilance is the price of liberty,’ 1
should not he forgotten for a mo
ment, especially bv a people who
have suffered as we by Hadical mis
rule.—Early County Xeu-x.
The only “endorsement" that Hon
Wm. E. Smith ever gave Parson Eel
ton, was to endorse part of his record
in Congress. It was his desire that
Mr. Felton should submit his mime
before the Democratic Convention of
the Seventh. As an “Inde|iendciit'
candidate Tete Smith never slid en
dorse him; and this fact is exactly in
accordance with tlie statement
made to tlie editor of the Cartcrsvillc
Free Preen. No, no, Mr. Willing
ham, Hie tiecond District is an “or
ganized’’ District, ami certainly its
leader is on the same line.

Tlie Fever.
The demand for nurses at tlie How

Memphis has been in excess of the
supply. The present warm weather
has tended to favor the spreading of
the fever, and reports from tlie ini

physicians from adjacent lowns.wltii

of medical men in Memphis, ami the
demand is increasing daily. There
have been twenty-six death- during
