the Albany correspondent of the Sav-
Dinah Xeirs. has this to say:
It is now about twenty-seven year;
.ince I rame to Albany! then a smal)
>ov ; hut I remember ’distinctly that
mr present thriving city was then e
■•ery diminutive “pertater" indeed.
Ct was little better than a cross-road
grocery settlement. A few shabby
looking stores, poorly- filled witi>
goods, which had to be hauled by
•vagon from Macon, were scattered
tlong Broad street, and some of them
eemed sadly in need of a prep. Bat
T am digressing.
I set out to say something about
he old “landmarks” of Albany. 1
remember hearing Col. Nelson Tift
-poken of. seven and twenty yean
igo, as an able writer—I believe be
was then editor and proprietor of
i he Albany Patriot, a weeny paper
published here, and the parent of the

•f an enterprising spirit. He waa
i ben in the prime of life, and possess
'd of indomitable energy, and a fore-
ight far-reaching and strikingly cor
ed. He commenced life with hon-
•sty, sohrietv and energy as his capi
tal, and is to-day one of the wealth
iest men iq the county. When Azriel
calls him henco Albany may shed the
tear-of genuine affection, for to Mm,
more than to any other man, does she
owe her rapid development and
bright future.
Judge John Jackson is another of
Albany’s pioneers. He has been iden
tified witli its growth since its in
fancy, and has always taken a deep
interest in its advancement. Time
lias silvered his locks, hut it has not
bad tlie power to rob him of the
pluck and energy that - led him over
nil obstacles, aud finally- placed a
fortune within his grasp. ’
Next, in that far off time. I remem
ber General Henry Morgan, than as
now, one of the best criminal lawyers
in the State. To him is due the credit
•f being tho first to introduce “the
art preservative of all arts” in Albanv.
