MONEY COLLECTED AND SAVED.
In 1355 I found one hundred and
fifteen tax collectors’ accounts for
tunny years unsettled, and thirty or
forty old tax fi fas., all declared
worthless by former Comptrollers.-
1 got the Legislature to pass an act
authorizing me to close tip these mat
ters, and within two or three yenri
alter much labor, I realized over $20,-
000 for the State from them. Priti
pal and interest to date over $50,000.
In 13C2, when property was low,
Sir. Meiriinger, Secretary of the
Treasury, sent a large account against
the State for its Confederate taxes.—
Tlie Governor being absent, the ac-
eount was brought lo me, and be
lieving it largely wrong, I refused to
allow it. I wrote to Secretary Mc-
mingcr and lie would not notice my
letter. I then went to Augusta on
my own account, and informed
Judge Starnes, the eliicf-collector, of
how matters slood, and asked him to
let me examine tho tax-books. And
in a few days I found errors of over
$00,000, which he allowed, etc. These
two sums, principal and interest
amount to about $180,000
