The name of Albany was taken
from a city by tliat name on the Hud
son rinr. in the Slate 9! New York
The selection of the name. doubtless."
originated from the supposed similar
ity of the two places, both being at
the head of navigation of the rivw*
upon which they stand.
The site of Albany, in New York,
was an Indian settlement, chiefly of
the Mohawk tribes, long before lieu-
drirk, or Henry Hudson, sailed up
the North River. It was called
“Scah-negli-U-da," a word signifying
the end of the pine woods, or beyond
the pine woods. Such, and equally
appropriate, was also the name of a
settlement on llie Mohawk, at thi
lower end of the valley, which still
retains the appellation, though a lit-
tie Anglicised in orthography, being
spelled ^Schenectady.'’
From the account given in Jewel
Journal, it is supimsed that Hendrick
Hudson, in a ship called the “Halt
Moon,” proceeded u„ far as the pres
ent site of Albany, and perhaps as
high as Troy. He carried back to
Holland from whence he bad sailed
the intelligence of his discovery of-
noble river, navigable one hundred
and sixty miles, and passing tbrongii
the moat fertile and romantic region
imaginable. The discovery was made
early in the autumn of 1000. As soon
as the intelligence reached the'ihitch
East India Company, they sent otlr
men to establish trading posts in the
country. These traders ascended the
river and built a block-house a little Owtu u
below therpresent site of Albany, and
Leace it may be said that Albany was
founded in 1812, for in that year the
first permanent trading post was es
tablished there. Next to Jamestown
iu Virginia, it was the earliest Eu
ropean settlement withiu the thirteen
original colonies. A temporary fort
was erected in 1614, and the phtee
was named by the Dutch Boaverwyck;
or Beavertowu, from the circum
stance that great numbers of beaver
were found there.
A fortification called Fort Orange,
was built in 1623. Eight curious
pieces of ordnance were mounted
upon the ramparts of Fort Orange,
called by the Dntcb, according to
Vaader Kempt, Stein-gtttueken,
■tone pieces, because they were load
ed with atone instead of iron bails/
These caanon were formed of long
stout iron bars, laid longitudinally
and bonnd with iron hoops. Their
calibre was immense. (In 1639
complaint was made to the Dutch
Governor that the Fort was in a state
of miserable decay, and that the hogs
bad destroyed a part of id)
The town retained its origins)
name until 1664, when the New Noth-
erlauds (as the country on the Hudson
was called) passed into the hands of
the English. It then received the
name of Albany, one of the titles of
James- Duke of York, the grandsoq
of James VI of Scotland, and James
I of England, the brother of Charles
11, afterwards King James II, of En
gland.
Iu our next the history will be con-
tinned uadi the history ofAlbany,
Ga., is given from its settlement 'to
be present day.

A very well-bred and exceedingly
dignified young lady of this city en
tered a florUtV, to make a purchase,
when she was accosted as follow# .by
a shrill voice, resembling that of an
aged lady: <■
•‘Shot the door! don't you know
a.iy better? It’s cold ontside.”
Very much overcome with roortffi-
cxiioo and emliarrassracDt, she looked
about for the speaker, saying:
"Pardon me, madam; but the wind
blew so I could hardly dose the
door.”
“Well, mind your eye, ML*, and
dou’t do it again,”repeated the voice,
when, to her great astonishment ami
amusement, the young lady found
that she bad been conversing with a
w ell-educated and certainly very fa
miliar poll-parroL
Evidently annoyed at the bird for
deceiving her so, the young lady
tn rued tier back to the cage and was
intent oi>oii examining some flowers.
• fviddenly the same voice, or what
seemed to be, said to her:
“What can I do for von. Miss?”
••If you hold your tongue, I shall he
gratified above all things,” replied
the young lady, turning around as
sl:e spoke, and discovering the lady
proprietor standing in her presence.
The denouement was all that might
be imagined.
“Dan,” said a little four-year-old
boy, “give me a dollar to buy a mon-
ktv."
•• We’ve got a monkey in llie house
floe.” replied Dan.
“Who is it, Dan?” asked the little
fellow.
“You,” was the reply.
"Well, then, give me ten cents to
bay the monkey some nuts.”
ilis brother could not resist.
