Hints to Farmers.
Increases! crops and diminished ex
penses are the remedies for hard times
1 hiring the months Itclween now and
planting, consider carefully how this'
remedy may be applied. Begin this
autumn by carefitlly selecting from
your own crops the seed lor next
year's use; for. as we liave rejicatod-
iy shown, good sect! is at the founda
tion of large crops. Consider care
fully whether to plough in the tall or
spriug, bringing all your past expe
rience to bear on your decision. Slop
all the waste you find, and even seek
carefully for the wastes to In- stop
ped. Revive your past failures and
success, and search out the causes
which operated, ami decide how to
obviate the one, and gain the oilier
the comiug season. Carefully reflect
on your methods of feeding ill the
winter months, and ask yourself
whether a change uf system may not
he profitable. A dollar saved here is
a dollar earned; and fre«|uently the
sale of one kind of produce, and the
purchase of another, brings protit.—
When hay brings a gotMl price and
straw is cheap, cannot the straw lie
fell profitably through the use of
roots and cotton seed meal, and a
halauce in money In? secured ? Have
you facilities for rearing spring Iambs
for the next June or July market
More important still, consider how
imieli laud you have which is not
produriug, and yet which can be
made productive. If you have such
laud, it is certainly fuilv to leave this
capital idle. Is it a i|iicslion of ma
nure? 'I hen carefully consider how
manure may lie best provided, and
»briber you can purchase artificial
fertilizers, and use them advanla-
gcuusly. Now, before the hurry time,
is your opportunity for studying into
these things, and deciding what fer
tilizer is Hie most promising for you.
liave you all the tools necessary for
your.spring work ? If not, now fa the
time to examine into the merits of
various inventions, and to calculate
which you can best atl'ord to buy, if
at all. Csually a tool can be pur
chased more advantageously in win
ter than in summer. Often there are
too many tools on the farm, but some
of which are not adapted to your use.
Often again, you do not* possess
enough, nor of the right kind. In the
winter time reflect on these subjects,
and have a decision ready when plant
ing time again comes about. Care
fully look over your year’s expenses,
and think whether there has not been
waste here which mar be rectified.—
Calculate bow rnnch labor you wilf
require for your next year’s plans un
der your past system, and, with cau
tion, consider how your system may
be improved so that the same or more
work can be accomplished with less
labor or less money. Be not too ready
to adopt the new, but ever ready to
reject the old when your experience
indicates that a gain may be expected
to follow. Here, as elsewhere, use a
wise caution, which Is not conserva
tism, but common sense.
Neglected Children.
from Iks Ban] Sen.)
_ Many a mother has wept over the
sins of her child, little dreaming that
while she pursued her ronnd of idle
pleasures, that child was taking the
first lesson in sin from the example
of a vicious nurse. The truth is, pa
rents take upon themselves too many
necessary burdens, and consider them
selves bound by duty to pe.-form too
many tasks, which are of much less
consequence than the teaching and
training of their children. The .fat j-
er has his trade or profession, and
his liesure hours he must spend in so
cial pleasure. The mother has her
household cares and the comforts of
her family to stndy; ami besides this
there is much time to lie devoted to
fancy work, visitors, and to amuse-
meuts of one kind and another. Her
children are mere secondary consid
erations, and depend upon the kind
ness of hirelings. Their dresses may
be miracles of puffing, ruffies and
em’roidery, bnt what (Toes that count
when their minds are dwarfed thro’
neglect? Her house may be tlic
model of neatness, her bread excel
that of all her neighbors, her jellies
and preserves enough to tempt the
most fastidious; hut if in all this she
has kept aloof from her child, has
chilled his heart towards her, wliat
docs it count ?
Something for the New Year.
The world renowned success of
Ho-tctter’s Bitters, and their contin
ued prosperity for a quarter of a cen
tury as a stomachic, is scarely more
wonderful than the welcome that
greets the annual appearance of llos-
tetter's Almanac. This valuable med
ical treatise is published by Hostetler
tt Hruith, Pittsburgh, Pa., under llieir
own immediate sii|s-rvision, employ
ing eighty hands in that department.
Ten cylinder printing presses, eight
folding machines, five job presses,
etc., are running about eleven months
in the year on this woik, ami the
{•sue of same for 1870 will not he less
than ten millions, printed in the Kn-
gli-h, German, French, Welsh, Nor
wegian, Swedish, Holland, Bohemian
and Spanish languages. Refer to ii
for a copy of valuable and interest
ing reading concerning health, and
numerous testimonials »s to the effi
cacy of Hostetler’s Bitters, ainn-c-
ments, varied informal ion, astronom
ical observations, and chronological
items, etc., Which can bo ile|M:nded
on lor correctness. The Almanac lor
]87'> can be obtained free of cost
from druggists and general country
dealers in all parts of the country.
