Farming on the Pike Hill Place.
Messrs. Crine, Daniel & Co. have
made a good crop this year on the
Pike Hill place. AVhon Mr. George
Carlton took charge in February he
found the farm overgrown every
where with broom-straw, briars, etc.
Here is the result of the year’s opera
tion with twelve mules: 1,400bushels
of oats; 1,300 bushels of corn; 300
bushels of field peas; 1,500 bushels of
potatoes; 109 bales of cotton, etc.
At tho commencement, $60 was in
vested in hogs, fTom which they have
sold 2,500 pounds of pork, and have
now on the tann over 100 head, in
good condition. In a conversation
with Mr. Carlton wc learn that he re
lies to a great extent on chufas as a
food crop to ralso and fatten his swine.
He planted a bushel of them, and af
ter grazing 75 hogs on the patch two
months saved 40 bushels for seed.—

COMMITTEE ON ROADS AND BRIDGES.
Wo find the public roads through
out tho county well worked and in
good condition, with exception ofthc
road leading from Starkviile to the
I tail road station at Leesbnrg, which
has been turned in front of Mr L P.
Tison’s residence, and is in very bail
condition being almost impassable.
We also find that some of the bridge*
of the turnpike aeross Muckulec
creek, near Dr. Sanders’, some re
pairs. Cue of tho small bridges at
Starkvitlo which has a cover over it
is in a dangerous condition; the cov
cr is leaning and needs repairs at
once. One of tho small bridges has
settled down and needs raising; and
some of the bridges need bannisters.
Tho abutment of Wrlght’a bride over
the Kinchafoonce creek is needing re
pairs.
Wo find that there ianopnblie read
fading to the Court House, and ws
recommend that the Commissioner* of
Roads and Revenue* be requested to
take such action in the matter as will
cause necessary roads to be opened at
?““• Wc would also call the spec
ial attention of the proper authori
ties to the road that ha* been laid oat
from Leesbnrg to Adams Station by
Commissioners appointed for that
purpose, and show cause why said
road has not been opened. We
recommend that there Ire a public
road leading from Leesburg to
Graves bridgo on Muckalee. We
■earn that the bridges of tho turnpike
near Dr. Sander*’ arc under contract
vnd we recommend that tho road
Commissioners of the976 Dirt. G. M.,
have the same put in order without
delay.
COMMITTEE ON RECORD*.
We the committee on Records have
inspected the Book* of the difiuient
officers, and find them neatly kopt.
VYe find that the Ordinary hus taken
a bond from Administrator* that i*
uot sufficient; a* the bond is twenty
thousand dollars, and tho boutUmen
only return about four thoii*and. We
find that he lias allowed some private
accounts to go in with thesccoiuts of
the Administration, and recommend
that he be more particular ii. die fu
ture.
The Committee on Public Buildings
report: That the Court House is iu
good condition with the exception of
a portion ofthc plastering wti.cu li is
fatten. The jail is it, a sale condition,
the prisoner* comfortably cared for,
and the oclls neatly kepi. The privy-
needs a screw or blind to prevent»
view from the residence of Me:-*. Car
ter & Stokes; also of uuy oue pawing
by. One of the ooors ot' the privy is
o'fi'. We would call the attention of
the proper authorities to the iuvesti-
gation of the burning of the old Court
House; if by uegrou-. by wIiomi au
thority did they occupy the house?
We, the Committee, on the County
Court, ask to submit the following re
port ; Upon examination into tho af
fairs of the Couu.y Court, we find
that said Court is not self-sustaining,
but is a heavy expense upon the tax
payers of this county, as appear* to us
after a thorough investigation of the
Couuty Court expenses and resource*.
We earnestly petition that the Legis
lature of this State do repeal the
act organizing said County Court, as
it has not paid any money in the
County Treasury since its organiza
tion. We petition that our Senator
and Representatives in the Legisla
ture do all in their power to have
said act creating the County Court of
this Countv repealed.
W. U. Gill,
A. A. Rally’,
J.l’. Callaway.
In recommending the abolition o
the County Court, we would not be
understood as easting any reflections
upon the promptness fidelity and ef
ficiency with which the duties of that
office have been discharged by the
] iresent incumbent, nor any of the of-
] leers of the Conrt in their manage
ment of the affairs of the office. They
have accomplished all that their duty
and their obligation demanded, and
we are actuated alone by a sense of
duty to the tax-payers of this county,
and a knowledge of the circumstance*
which surround us in making this
rconnmeudation.
We recommend that in future the
Commissioners of Roads and Revenue
be more cautious iu allowing the Tax
Oollc.-tor his insolvent list, as there
hare been a good many fi fa’s re
turned and allowed on the insolvent
list that are now being collected by 9.
E. Scarborough tor half of the amount
collected, which ought not to tie per
mitted.
We recommend that special baillflk
be allowed three dollars per day for
each day’s actual service and the same
for each night of actual service.
We find that a committee appointed
by this Grand Jury cannot satisfacto
rily and thoroughly exarame iuto the
financea of the county during its ses
sion. We therefore i-ccommeud that
VY. C. Gill and Dr. J. I*. Stevens be a
committee of two, with n compensa
tion of two dollars per day lor each
day of actual service, whose duty it
shall he to thoroughly examine iuto
the financial condition of the county,
with authority to call for persons and
papers in the discharge of their duty,
ana to report to the Grand Jury of
the next March term of Court,
We cordially congratulate our fol
low citizens in the continued cujoy-
ment of the eminent abilities and
faithful services of His Honor Judge
Crisp, and tender to him our thauk*
for his usual acts of kindness aud
courtesy to us as a body, while in the
lischirge of our duties.
To Solicitor Hudson we are under
many obligations for the cheerful
alacrity and intelligence with which
he lias uniformly responded to our
calls for assistance.
We recommend that these present
ments be published in the Albany
News. Albany Advertiser aud Sumter -
Republican, and that Dr. J. P. Ste
vens ho authorized to make arrange
ments with these papers.
