Knvroxs News: About the month
of Augnat, ISM, as the Militia were
returning home on au indefinite leave
of absence, all in high glee, ami very
noisy, as the train stopped at a cer
tain depot on the Southwestern Rail
road an old Confed in rear eud of the
car railed out to another Confed in
the front end of the car:
“Jim, baTe yon on hand a supply
of blacking with which to black your
boots and shoes?”
Jim replied no.
“Then," said the interrogator, “you
are gone up, for you can't get any
tuore."
Jim asked why not?
“Because.” aid the interrogator*
“Joe Brown has bought it all.”
At the mention of the name of Joe
Brown the Militia aboard the tain
were all attention.
Jim asked, “what did Joe Brown
want with all the blacking V To
which the first replied:
“Hr wants it to black the tails of
the lightning-bugs to keep them from
scarring his Milisb.”
Quiet reigned in that ar the ba!
ance of the trip.
It will be remembered by those
conversant with the history ot the
times that in the month of February,
ISM, the Confedeate Congress passed
an act declaring that the old issue of
Confedeate money should be taken
up with new issue at per cent
discount. It will also be remembered
that the act of the Georgia Legisla
ture ailing out the Militia, provided
that the Militia should not go out of
the State. These two facts being
borne in mind the following will be
appreciated:
The Militia had been ordered to tlie
city of Macon to await further orders.
On the day that the orders ame for
the Militia to take the tain for At
lanta there chanced to be under the
ar shed at Macon (the place where
the Militia took the tain) abont 130
old soldiers who had come from LeeV
army with a parcel of prisoners and
were on their way back.
The old soldiers made many amus
ing remarks which annoyed the Mili-
tia no Uttle.
Eventually the old soldiers com
tnenced to cry out, “Get out of the
way boys and let the new issue circu
late." This was re pa ted several
times. At last a shrewd Militia man
confronted the leader and said :
“There's no discount on the new
Issue.”
The old soldier replied, “Yes, bat
you are Georgia sbinplssters; yon
won't go out of the State.” W.
Things Seen No Matter Where I
Go.
No Matti e Wuf.ce, Dec. 7,1878.
Editor* Albany A’on :
lo fulfillment of a long thought, I
purpose writing, in a brief manner,
soma things 1 see wherever I go.
*Tis pleasant to see our country
blessed with such great abundance, a
fact easily observed, no matter in
what direction the traveler goes; for
sorely this section is an Egypt, as re
gards supplies. We have not had
such times within the memory of the
writer of this article, in point of plen
ty and low prices; nor is this true
simply of some partial community,
but the application is general to the
whole country. This truth was man
ifest at the various Fair Associations
held the present season, (lie exhibits
having been the most extensive in
quantity and excellent in quality of
any previous exhibitions of the kind ;
and no matter at what point one vis-
ited these Associations, the result of
observation -was the same.
This has also been a year of general
improvement throughout the conn-
try: f«r, no matter where I go—eith-
Somctliing for tlio New Year.
Tito world renowned success of
llo-u-lU-r's Hitlers, and their contin
ued pros|ierity for a quarter of n cen
tury as a stomachic, is scaretv more
wonderful than the welcome that
greets Hip annual appearance <>f Hos
tetler's Almanac. This valuable med
ical treatise is published by llostetter
d* Smith, I'iltsnurgli, Pa., under their
own immediate supervision, employ
ing eighty lutnds in that department.
Ten cylinder printing presses, eight
folding machines, five Job presses,
etc., are running nlmut eleven months
in Ilia year on this work, and the
issue of same for 18711 will not he less
than ten millions, printed In the Ku-
Hindi, German, French, Welsh. Nor-
egian, Swedish. Holland, Bohemian
and Spanish languages. Bcfcr to it
lor a corn* of valuable and interest
ing reading concerning health, ami
numerous testimonials ns to the elii-
ency of Hostetler's Bitters, amu-e-
inenls, varied information, astronom
ical olMCrvations, anil chronologic: I
items, ale., which can lie depended
on for correctness. The Almanac tor

tr in city, town or country—r observe
the band of improvement, snch as the
repairing of old building* and fences
and the erection of new ones, putting
out fruit tree*, etc. Especially is the
latter true of our sister counties,
Worth and Mitchell, the farmers of
which seem to lie determined to give
fruit raising a thorough ami practical
tost. This shows the superior good
sente, of (he people of the present
time; hut didn’t it take a long time
in tbe school of experience to teach
the important lesson of trying to lire
at home? At last, however, the les
son is learned, and I hope will not
soon be forgotten.
I noticed a short while ago, when
in Camilla, that all the improvement
is not confined to the country: for
that thriving little c.ltv, with its clever
people, has improved more rapidly
this year than at any time since its
commencement, and yet there are not
buildings enough to supply the de
mand. And what shall I say more
altout—no matter where I go? for it
would weary your many readers, and
you, too, were I to write the one hun
dredth part of all one sees and hears,
no matter where they go. One thing
more, however, I will say, no matter
who may dispate it, and that is that,
amid tbe great abundance through-
oat our land, there is nothing so
abundantJust now ss candidates for
county office*, as tbe country press
will fully substantiate by the long
columns of notices; and no matter
what paper you take tip to read, it is
all the same—chock full of notices to
the dear people, that each one offer
ing for office is willing to sacrifice
personal interests upon their coontry’s
altar.
If desired, you may hear again
