the following railroad news, which
will prove of great interest to the
people of Albany and Southwest
Georgia:
"A few doya ago that rich and ag

and Nashville railroad, obtained
enough of tiro bonds of tho Tennessee
division of the Southeastern railroad
to insure the future control of the
road. It is only forty miles long, but
it is of great Importance as a connec

The Advance iu Cotton.
The advance in cotton, noted in the
last month, is fully 2% ceuts for all
;radee. The cause of tbit rapid t isc
d edr great Southern staple may be
gathered from the cottou circular of
rinlih, Edwards t Co., cottou brok
ers ot Liverpool, which wo find com
mented upon iu the Savannah yens.
‘Di-clisting the subject of tho viflb’e
-upply of cotton, this circular s.cys
that sueh supply is 350,000 bale* ttc-
ow that of last year. Probably the
-piuner* throughout the world hold
. surplus of from 150,000 to 200,000
>alt'4 and there may be a little more
shipped from ludia during the- re
mainder of the season, but, in ant
ivent, there must be a material re-
j ductiou of consumption of the raw
j staple if tha present supply is to be
made to last throughout the autumn.
It seems likely, therefore, that t'.ie
present advance iu prices will’ be
maintained at least until the new crop
iiegitu to come In, and the effert must
lie au advance in prices of all kinds
of cotton good*. In England, tve
-ec it stated that the business of the
spinners has beau considerably
checked because the German spinner*
took advantage of the late low prlco
:o lay in a large stock of material,
and are now supplying yarn* at rate*
with which Manchester exporter*
einuot compete. Thi- will reduce the
general supply, and, consequently*
increase tlte value of manufactured
goods. Aud when this decreased
supply is worfted off, apd the English
spinner* can resume busiuess profita
bly with the material which Ihcy
bave purchased at the advanced rates,
it will follow tfiat tho supply then in
the market must be sold at higher
price* than heretofore. Thi* will be
the only uutiiral result of the present
rise in cotton, utiles* something, at
this lint* unforeseen, shell occur iu
the near future to again rodueo the
price of the raw material—a eontin
geney which just now appear* to be
by i.o means likely.”

Gulf and the Brunswick and Albatty
road*. Titus there troiijd lie a direct

It is said that the Louisville aud
Nashville 1ms long had nit eye on this
matter and it* present movements,
apparently sudden, are the ypju}is of
long matured plans to nenctratp
•souteru Georgia and control a line to
the roaal. It is understood that the
m-w road ts to be built at once in the
best possible style. This distance is
ouly about 00 miles, and the work
would not be long in progress, backed
by sue)) an enterprising company.—
One reason assigned ior t||is activity
on the part of tho Louisville lipc is
the fact that the Cincinnati Southern
will soon be completed, and will offer
new inducements for the Western
produce which conies to the South.—
The Louisville line was compelled to
tproad itself, as it were, to meet this
new and dangerous competition. It
therefore did not wait until the great
rival cantc down on it. but like the
prudent man prepared for danger
while it was yet distant—not so very
distant, however, in this case. This
new project may prove another fac
tor in the great competition which
seems to be springing up more form
idablv every year between the great
Western anil Southern lines.”
This looks more like a completion
of the B. & A. than anything we have
read lately, and to the great aud
wealthy corporation mcutloned above
must wo uow look for the success
of a great trunk line which can but
add greatly to the material prosper
ity of Ali-auy and Southwest Geor
gia.
Till* line established, and the un
just discriminations against us by the
Central monopoly will be crushed.
We have no fear of evil effects from
additional railroads. It is only tho
fogvlsm of the present age that re
sists the spirit of enterprising compe-
•ition.
We have frequently in these col
utnn9 allttdod to the importance and
great convenience to Albany, which
would be afforded by a railroad from
Eufanla here, and its unnecessary to
repeat. It would enable tho 170 mile
lino from here to the coast to work
independent of the Central, aud would
thus give Albany every advantage a9
the nearest interior cotton market to
the great outlet; would so reduce
Western freights as to make this tbc
cheapest produce market in South
Georgia, and at once build out- city
to rank where she Justly belongs.
All bail to the efforts of the Louis
ville & Nashville Road, and may that
corporation push vigorously forward
iu the great work she has undertaken.
A railroad war is w aging in Atlan

then the war began in cutting rates.
