Two year* ago her hnslmnil—who
had been too little practical to make
a successful farmer—had died sud
denly, leaving his affairs in a very eiir
larrtMil state, and the farm ' bur
deued with a very heavy mortgage.
Then Jack, good son and brother that
be »■*, bvl thought it best In go In
the city, taking advantage of a situa
tion offered him by a distant relative,
until the mortgage should lie paid.
Only two weeks ago be hail writ

would lie speedily settled to their
satisfaction; and now, just as they
were expecting to hear that their
home wa* their own again, came thi
cruel letter.
As Marion had said to her mother,
not eyen the losa of their homes went
lo her heart with so sharp * pang a*
did this evidence of the change in her
brother.
That Jack should have grown so
worldly and hearties* as to consider
hi* ^pecuniary advantage before the
gratification of hi* mother’* comfort;
that he should allow them to be actu
ally turned out of the dear old house,
ami go to re*ide in the strange city,
w here they could never feel at home
—oh, this wa* I be bitterest pong of
all!
Ho Marion hail thought upon first
reading that letter; and it waa not
until hearing Mi** ’Melia’* word* to
tier mother that ahe awoke lo the con-

greater aorrow than Ihia in store for
One year ago ahe bad parted from
her accepted lover, Wat Hinton, in
mutual anger on both aide*. Wat bad
become jealous, and bad spoken
sharply to her, and in a manner which
she considered herself justified in re
senting.
Wat wa* too proud to apologize,
and Marion too proud a* well as loo
delicate to make advance* looking t«
a reconciliation; and so they had
drifted apart, both miserable, until
Wat had broken the last link by go
ing to the West.
Jibe heard of him from time to time
through hi* family, but no word or
message to herself ever came. In all
this while ahe had looked forward
with a faint yearning hope to the

But now this last hope was rudely
^Who told you that of me, Marion ?’
“It came from Agnes, your own

He smiled.
“Aggie know* my wishes. It wa*
she who encouraged me lo come
back. She thought yon would for
give me. Will you'. Marion, dar
ling?”
She had averted her lace to hide
her tearful eves, but he now took
both her hand*, and a* he drew her
toward him, a great tide of unspeak
able joy rushed over her, and she
murmur fniutly: “Oh,
Aggie replies, ’If Walter isn't mar
ried before winter, I'll make you a
present of my new earrings which be
has sent me.' So you see it's a certain
sure; and no doubt he’ll bring his
bride to Tisit his family, and then, tell
Marion we may look out for a grand
party. When the Hinton's undertake
to do things they always do it hand
somely.”
Marion stayed to hear uo more.—
Gliding out of a side door, she crossed
the garden, passing little Myra, who could' onlv

Foor little sister! It would be a*
hard upon her as upon her mother
