Will llie South ever become pros

of Wall street have absolute control
of her cotton crop ?
A fool of snow fell in Ontario on
Sunday night; and at Winnipeg,
Maitiiobia, an ice bridge formed on
the river ami people crossed over on
l.ast Tuesday’s elections.
On Tuesday elections were held in
Maryland. Massachusetts, Mississippi,
New Y'ork. Pennsylvania, Connecti
cut and Virginia; but the only very
important ones are those of Virginia,
Massachusetts and New Y'ork.
Virginia’s contest was between re-
pndiationists and non-repudiation-
i-!s of her public debt. In Massachu
setts Beast Butler was defeated, and
with him the lint money here-y. New
Y’ork opened the big light wldrli is
to be decided in 1880. ami therefore
was the most important of all.
The Augusta Chronicle corrects our
-tatement that the New Y’ork Tri

cle says that Mr. Hill's letter was
published simultaneously in the Tri

Kenfroe’s trial is still agitating the
minds of some of the editors. YVe
didn't like the verdict ourselves, but
we are not yet convinced that the
Senators who voted not guilty, were
iuflueneed by wrong motives, or were
recreant to their duty in the premises.
The Macon Convention of Bankers
last week passed resolutions agree
ing to continue loaning money as
usual. John II. James, of Atlanta,
advertised last week that he would
continue to loan at 12 per cent per
annum. He says flic usury law will
he evaded as long us men want to
borrow money.
A Hartford correspondent of a
northern paper says that the Gate
City Guards, while marching through
the street* of Hartford, joined in
with the yankee boy* in singing:
“YVe'll hang Jeff Davis on a sour ap
ple tree." One of the members of the
Guards has written a letter to the
Constitution denying the statement.
If it is true, it was extremely ilis-
•"iiirteou* on the part of the northern
hoys, and infamous on the part of Hie
Atlanta Company. However, we
don’t believe they did it.
President Hayes i- again interfer
ing in matters outside the pale of his
official duties, and lowering to the
dignity anil usefulness of his high
position. Just now he is advising
the Republican* in Y’irginin not to
vote for the readjustment of the .State
debt which has been submitted to the
Iteople. However wrong the propos
ed plan may he, it certainly is not a
matter in which the President should
take any interest or express any opin
ion. Hayes is really disgracing him
self, liis party ai d his country by his
weak ami parti-an course.
I fox. Z.xcii Ciianhi.ri!. the noto
rious Republican Senate,r of Michi

the Grand Pacific Hotel in Chicago,
on Saturday morning. He was re
turning home from a slumping tour
through Wisconsin. In his death the
South has lost one of her bitterest,
most implacable enemies, and lbs Re
publican party one of its most ener
getic and influential members. Pres
ident Hayes ordered the public olii-
«-e» to l»* closed, and flags to lie low
ered to half mast, in honor of the
dead Senator.

Rainhridge is interested over an

Iteul Estate In tin* (I’rst.
The Denver Land Company offer
in another column alternate lots in
their addition. These alternate lots
are in fnrt given aivay, though a nom
inal charge ol one dollar is made for
tlie deed. The Company limit tlie
number purchasable at this price to
live lots. Many of the largo cities of
the West have been started in a simi
lar manner, nnd those who secured
lots then, find themselves now in
possession of valuable property. The
opportunity does not often preset t
itself of making an investment in Re
al Estate at such prices. Tlie relia
bility of the Company and their title
to the property being well establish
ed, there could lie no risk, with a line
prospect for a rapid increase iu val
ue. Denver lias had siirli a wonder
ful rapid growth, it is probable that
tin: land ottered will lie speedily ta
ken up.
