Death of Little Helen llanks.
One of the saddest afflictions we
have ever been called upon to chron
icle is that which lias befallen the
family of Rev. It. T. Hanks, in the
death of his little daughter, Helen
which occurred on Monday after
noon of congestion of the brain. At
a time when relatives front afar had
conic to join in congratulations to
the happy parents on the birth of a
son, their first-born—bright, lovely,
tlie joy of the home—was stricken
down with fell disease. The devoted
mother—too ill to minister to her
darling one—could only hope and
pray, while the anxious father and
loving friends watched beside tlie
bedside of the patient little sufferer,
soothing as best they might her suf
ferings.
Little Helen was a wonderfully
b.-ight and lovely child, with gentle,
winning ways that charmed all hearts,
and, outside of her own family there
were many who loved her as if she
had been their own. Her illness
caused deep anxiety in many a home
mid her death cast a wide-spread
gloom over tlie entire city. In tliclr
great sorrow the bereaved parent
have the sincerest sympathy of the
community, and earnest prayers as
cend to the Throne of Grace that the
God whom they serve will give them
strength in this, tlie hour of their hit
ter trial, and pour the balm of liis
consolation upon their wounded and
broken spirits.

A Novel Voyage,
We hud a pleasant call a few days
ago from Mr. George U. Williams, of

Florida in a row boat. Mr. AVilliams
launched liis boat in tlie Flint a few
miles below Fort Valley, and lias

a few days at a time on hix route,

whenever a pleasant spot attracts liis
attention and invites repose, ho heads
in for tlie shore and in a few moments
erects n “lodge in tlio wilderness,”
ami there abides till ready to move
on ngniu. His only companion is liis
flute, and with it lie guiles tlie hours
as lie floats down the stream or sits
besides Ids camp-fire in the dark and
lonely forest. So far the voyage has
been very pleasant, and no mishap
lias befallen the adventurous “mnri
tier.” Game has been abundant, and
tlie scenery attractive. Mr. Williams
is Inking liis time, ns the trip is puro
ly one of pleasure. lie will remain

THE LIBRARY FAIR!
A SpUmd'Hl liotv of Kirh,
IJfiiulifwl and Useful
Articles!
rROSPKOT FOU A (iUATirVINU SUCCESS
The Fair of tlie Albany Library As
sociation began last night at Willing-
iiain'a Hall, under favorable auspices,
it was early when we entered the
hall, ami (lie crowd had hardly begun
to enter, hilt the well-known public
spirit of our citi/.ciis mid the great
attractions of the Fair warrant the
belief that it will prove tiiianeinlly a
success. The exhibition if very large
and brillimit, mid standing at tlie
dour of the ball, tlie scene presented
•it glittering lights anil lien itifiil ar
ticles is indeed a beautiful one.
As you enter the Hull, on the left
the magnificent display of domestic
articles greets the eye. There stretch
row after row of counters piled with
sacks of Hour, boxes of crackers, pyr
amids of canned nnd preserv'd fruits,
beer, wines, cigars, potash, soap, agri
cultural implements, candies, coffee,
and a numerous array of (lie finest
quality of fancy and linn Iy groceries.
This department, with I In- busy sales
men mid thronging crowd, resembles
very much a thriving store in an era
of lliisli times. This departiktcul is in
charge of Paul Hill.
Ou tlie eastern side ut the Hall are
several show cases arranged with nu
merous articles—flour, potash, ex
tracts, cigars, fancy goods, etc. These
are sold by lot: twenty-five cents
purchases a scaled envelope, in which
is a slip with the name of some arti
cle contained in tlie show cases on it.
The holder of tin: ticket is entitled to
whatever article is marked on it.—
This is ouc of tlie most popular fea
tures of the Fair.
In the alcove near the left of tlie
stage is tlie fancy goods department,
presided over by I’rcst. W. E. Mitch
ell. Il is most artistically arranged,
and with piles of glittering articles
makes a beautiful scene. There arc
rich vases, glassware, toilet articles,
perfumery, stationery, pictures, and
a large eollcetion of varied specimens
of pretty and useful fancy work of
every description.
Immediately in front of the stage
are placed the dry goods counters,
over which Mr. A. Isaacs has charge.
In tliis department arc sncqnes,
shawls, tidies, rugs,scarfs, mats, cush
ions, etc., nil of them remarkable for
beauty of workmanship and design.
Pnssing through into tlie supper
room tlie odor of steaming coffee and
savory viands greet the olfactories
and tempt tlie appetite. A most boun
tiful supper is served for fifty cents f
and oysters and eoflec « hi mode are
to lie had for a quarter. Tlie refresh
ment tables should be liberally pat
ronized by tlie business men tiiis
evening. Titov can get a very ‘square’
tueal and save tlio trouble of going
home after it.
These notes have been hurriedly
written, nnd for want of time and
space arc necessarily brief,nnd many
tilings worthy of notice have been
unavoidably passed by. The Fair
presents inanv attractions, and we
urge upon our citizens to extend it a
liberal support. Tlie results of the
election for the most popular young
lady and most popular newspaper
cannot he obtained at the hour of
going to press. Again wc urge upon
til our citizens to attend the Fair to
night.

Enterprise and Progress.
One of the living institutions of
Albany, and one in which our people
tnkc special pride, is tlie hardware
house of Messrs. Sliefflelil & Bell.—
Only little over a year old, it lias by
the enterprise, progress ami thorough
business tact of Mr. Bell, the manag
ing partner, taken a foot-hold which
would require the most adverse cir
cumstances to loseti; ami to-day en
joys a reputation which hut few
houses of long years standing have
attained.
To-day the firm renews its invita
tion to the readers of tlie News to
call and examine tlie stock. A free
use of printers ink, strict attention to
the wants of the public, square, fair
and liberal dealing has made the
store of Sheffield & Bella household
word in .Southwest Georgia, and it is
not for tlie purpose of reintroducin
them that we allude to their large ad
vertisement ; but in order to inform
onr readers that just now they liavi
in store a heavy stock of plantation
implements, stoves, housefurnishing
goods, tinware, woodettwarc, table
cutlery, guns, powder, shot, wagon
timbers, and a thousand different ar
ticles in their peculiar line ton nu
merous here to mention, blit which

TRAIN ROBBERY.
A Mind Crime anil a Skillful Execution of It.
For some time past tlie C. 15. It. of
ficials at this point have been missing
cation from llioir freight trains. The
cotton leaving Albany all right would
heck short” one or two hales when
it reached Savannah, and tliediscrcp-
mey could not lie accounted for. On
Friday afternoon last the Macon
freight left Albany on schedule time,
amt when il reached Adams Station,
shortly after dark, Conductor Welch
discovered one of the boxes open,
and investigation showed that three
hales of cotton were missing. Mr.
Welch ran liis train to Sniitliville and
swilcliiug off liis engine ran hack to
Lecsbucg, and procuring the Section
Master returned up tlie track in
search of tlie lost cotton. Their search
was fruitless, 1ml next morning tlie
Section Master, renewing Hie hunt,
found the cotton between Adams .Sta
tion and Leesburg. Two of tlie bales
were lying about a hundred yards
from the track while the oilier one
had been rolled away nearly a quar
ter of a mile. The supposition is Hint
tlie robbers hearing tlie returning en
gine, and learning that they were be
ing hunted for, abandoned the cotton
for fear of being discovered. Two
negroes were arrested on suspicion
ami a commitment trial was held on
Monday and Tuesday.
One of tlie parties was tlie pumper
at the water tank between Leesburg
anil Adams'—liis name wc did not
learn ; the other, Crawford Williams,
lived near by. At the trial there
was no evidence against them, and
they were dismissed. No other par
ties have beep arrested, and the mat
ter rests where it is—shrouded in
mystery.
New Seed now in ; just received.

The Census Question.
The Savannah News’ Washington
correspondent furiiLlies the follow
ing dots concerning the Georgia cea-
>us matter:
“Tlie Georgia delegation is so di
vided on the question of who shall
je the live supervisors of tlie census
'“the State that the matter has about
trifled into allowing tlie two Sena
tors supervision of the matter. This
is the proper way, as the Senate will
have the confirmation of the super-
.’isors, appointments. According to
.tie caucus decision no Republican
partisan appointees for tills work
‘Vill bo confirmed. If appointees for
this work cannot he wholly controll
ed iu this way to secure a fair return,
ittcnliou will he next directed to the
selection of the enumerators. But as
tlie enumerators arc selected by the
supervisors, it is of the utmost im
portance that they should be fair men.
fliis question is of vital interest, es
pecially to the South. Declarations
>f leading Radicals show that they
ixpect much from a reduction of tlie
Soil ill’s representation by the returns
of the next census.
Bronze Cent-.—Owing to the de
mand for them there were turned out
by tlie Philadelphia mini last month
>ver three million of one cent bronze
nieces. This supply did not come up
:o tlie demand by about ten ortwelvo
thousand dollars, and the demand
continues. The mint is at work on
hose coins as far as its other business
will permit, and it is expected that in
t short time the full demand will bo
met.
