the State will be enormous this year
and will pay into the Treasury of the
State about $50,000, besides giving

Penitentiary, notwithstanding about
fifteen or sixteen members of the
Georgia Legislature thought differ
ently ; and the investigation of that
honorable body only showed how
honest he was. He is in every way an
exemplary officer, and a good and
noble ruau.
There is no officer of the Govern
ment at this time doing more for the
State than the Attorney-General
Hon. It. N. Ely, and getting, in pro
portion, less pay for if. He is p*>se-
cutiug claims against every railroad
in the Slate, for taxes past due, and,
with the able assistance of Georgia’*
greatest lawyer and statesman, lion
R. Toombs, be baa been fighting* them
for their taxes since he came into of
fice. The railroads have filed affida
vita of illegality, and from one pre
tax to another, have stayed off; but
the day is bursting forth upon them,
and last week was argued in the Su
preme Court the Southwestern rail
road case, for taxes due for 1874, 5, G,
7, 8, 9 and '80, under the Act of 1874,
and all amendatory acts, which will
amount to a large sum and make the
Treasury of Georgia swell lip to
nearly half a million dollars. This is
but a small part of the work Major
Ely has to do as Attoruey-Goneral.

day. whether hot or cold, clear or cloudy,
only let it not rain or the air la* murky; in
other words, let the nir In* dry and clear,

hold your surface east ami west, hut
instead of holding the surface vertically,
incline it nbout forty, five degrees to the

from the two joints which were
thereafter to serve as a nose. Tommy
was rendered partially unconscious

cause of its peculiar position, leaving
them as white as snow. Shortly af

the upper lip in a neat manner. The
