HARK TWAIN AS A POET.
[Ilia Translation of Heine’s "Lorelei” in
••Tramp Abroad.”
I cannot divine what it roeanelli.
This liaunting nameless pain;
A talk of the bygone ages
Keeps brooding tlinuigli my hrain.
The faint air cools in the gloaming,
Ami pea.-epil flows the Kliliie,
The thiraty summits are drinking
The sunset’a flooding w ine.
The loveliest maiden is silting.
High-throned in yon blue air,
tier golden jewels arc shining.
She coiiiIm her gulden luiir;
She coiiiIm with a eumh that is golden
An sings a weinl refrain
That stee|w in a deadly enchantment
The listener’s ravished hrain;
The deemed in his drilling shallop
la tranced w ith the sail, sweet tune.
He mss not the yawning breakers,
lie sees hut the inaid alone:
Tlie pitiless billows engulf him,
.•jo |ierish sailor and hark.
Ami this with her lislefol singing
la the Loreleb grewsomc work.
Well I»one.
IWnhury Newa.l
Young housekeepers have to nr-
quire a knowletlge of douiestic du
ties by careful gradation. A Nelson
street brhle having occasion to boil
eggs lor breakfast, got the desired
time for cooking ami put them in.—
Her husband liked his eggs soft, and
three minutes was the time allowed
to make I hem palatable. She sta
tioned herself in front of the clock,
betflfuisc she did not dare to depend
on her memory, and looked at its
fate with awful intensity.
Her husband found her when lie
came into the kitchen, and finding
out what she was doing, asked her
how long the eggs had been in.
“One minute.” he answered,
lie went to the sink and turned
over the pans, and spread out his
legs in front of the glass, and felt of
his nose, and moved to the window
and stared out at the scenery. Final
Iv lie said:
“Ain't they about done, Maria?’’
f Not yet.” she said.
“It seems to me those eggs have
been cooking fifteen minutes,” lie ex
claimed.
“Well, they aint been cooking hut
a minute and a half liy this clock,”
■lie positively asserted.
“Then all i’ve got to say,"exclaim
eil the lidgely man. after a pause, “is
that it is the longest minute ami a
halt that I ever saw."
There w as a pause.
“Well, Maria.” he broke out, “let’s
have the eggs, and I’ll run the risk,
know it is half an hour since I came
in here.”
“I>o you suppose I'm blind and
can't see a clock! It is only two min
ulcs since these eggs were put in the
water. Here's the hand,”said she,
pointing to the hour hand, "and it
has only gone over those two dot
and each one of them is a minute,
ain't it ?”
“Yes, each one of them is a miniit
when the minute hand indicate:
them,” he coincided with smothered
sarcasm; “gnd when the hour hand
docs it, each one of them is twelve
minutes; or in other words, those
eggs have been cooking just twenty
tour minutes, and as we have no
cold chisel I shall he obliged to omit
eggs on this occasion.”
And with this he plumped inoodi
ly into a chair, and she burst into
tears.”

“Four and Twenty Black Birds”
—A Novel Dish at a Fash
ionaltle Dinner.
A wealthy lady in New York re
eenlly gave a fashionable dinner, at
which the guests were treated to
novel, but pleasing disli. The hos
teas had served about a hundred liv
sparrows. These she enclosed be
tween two immense pen crusts which
were held together by crimping,
and through which were numerous
apertures that permitted the passage
of the air. At the dinner the dish
was mysteriously covered up, and ex
cited the curiosity of the guests, who
were much astonished ami not a little
startled, when the crisp crust was
broken and the chirping, twittering
birds flew oul, lighting on tlie heads
and shoulders of the guests and about
on the furniture, glad to get out
from their novel cage. At last -Ilie
windows were opened, and flic little
captives were sent out again into the
sun shine and air. The dish was a
novel one indeed, ami the guests
were highly delighted with the pleas
ing experiment, and deelarcd that
iliey intended trying it themselves.—
It was a practical illustration of the
famous nursery song about “Four
and twenty blackbirds,” and as an
ornamental and attractive dish was
certainly n success.
Decay of the Teeth
Arises from vaiious causes, hut prin
cipally it may he attributed to early
