Trees Dying.
We regret exceedingly to see that many
of the young trees set out during tin* put
year on the glde-w alks, and w hich a few
weeks <tgo were growing and putting
forth beautifully have been killed by the
long severe drouth. Niuntvrs of them
can be seen throughout the city turned
ivrfeetly yellow, and no doubt entirely
dead. Of course they w ill lie replaced

In no one thing has the City Council

drought. It will doubtless bean experi

it w ill lv a matter of economy Ivtli of

A Practical Joke,
We learn that on Sunday night last
se veral of our young him ids indulged in
the very interesting amusement of remov
ing the empty ehiekeu roops from the
front of stores, whieh caused eonsidera-
Me annoyance to our produce merchant
Of conr-e recreation is something to Ik
sought after, hut when it is purrha-isl at
the cxjvn-e of our merchant*, causing
trouble and delay in the exchange
commodities, etc., it should is? htop|s*d
by our city authorities at the earliest |io*-
sible moment. Practical jokes never take
well, and oftentimes lead to private quar
rels, nearly always ending in jvrsonal
feud-.
Obiliterate the Stamps.
An exchange nays: “It may save our
cigar merchants a case in the I’nited
States Courts to lv a little more can*fill
in their dest met ion of the stauqis affixed
to cigar ami tobacco Ivxcs. The simple
mutilation ol the stamp when a Ivx is
opened is not conforming to tin* law*.—
The stamp must lv enrirely destroyed or
the person in whose posscssson the Im»x is
found is liable to a heavy line and im
prisonment. The term of court is now
approaching, and as half the line gm*s to
the informer it need not surprise even
the most innocent and conscicntoiis to
bacco dealer to find himself arraigned for
the violation of the internal revenue laws.
Our attention lias been called to this mat
ter by a prominent lawyer, who noticed
Ivys ujvn the street playing witli I sixes,
ti|vii which hail not Iven properly anni
hilated.**
We have noticed (ue satin* thing in this
city, ami warn our merchants to In* more
careful. A little precaution may save
milch trouble an annoyance.
The Public Alleys.
Our public streets and alleys are to a
great extent the acknowledged recepta
cle of all that is dirty and filthy. Much
of what is daily throw n into them is lia
ble to reach a state of putriticatioii, there
fore how really ini|vrtaiit it is tojtecp
them clean, especially as the summer
season is now here On an extended
visit throughout the eitv yesterday, we
found the majority* of our alleys the re
plica! of considerable dirt and refuse
matter. This may, or may not, breed
sickness, hut it should behoove our city
mitliorities to look into the matter, and
at least strive to keep these places in a
•late of perfect neatness. An ounce of
prevention is worth a pound of cure.
A Good Sign.
We have learned from good substantial
authority* that several of our progressive
merchants are contemplating a visit
north, in order to perfect arrangements
ary to carry out plans in the way
of erecting large and commodious public
buildings. A few more commanding
buildings on Broad street will indeed
give to Albany* the appearance of a large,
progressive city. We have the energy
and push, and it is being utilized.
Roughing lt #
A merry party* of young men from Al
bany, w ho have tven closely* confined to
the desk uiul counter, and at the liar, will
leave in a few days for a long luanvning
low*n along the coasts of Florida. Their
main object is recreation, although pleas
ure will form an important part of their
jaunt.
The pleasures of roughing it have often
been ad vis-a ted by people who have nev-
r tried the cX|vrimcut. Young men for
instance, who have been delicately’
brought up and have never know n what
hardship is further than that confined in
walk down town, and ivrhaps hack
gain, projMise to themselves a regular
old-fashioned marooning. They never
■mint oil the blisters which will lvsct
their feet, and the effects of a noon-day
sun.
Slim sybarites who are always exquis
itely dressed, and l<M»k like radiant Ap-
1 vllos in the ]iantn1oons of the ikmt«m1,
ought not to <?X|H*ct to do deeds of prow
’s* until their mussels have been trained
and their nerves made steadier. Koras to
them, this roughing it is all an illusion.
It is intended for men and women who
have either Iven used to it all their lives,
or who have been acclimated by harsh
experience. When young jieoplo who
have Iven delicately brought up wish to
rough it they* must do it amateurishly*.
They* must enjoy the luxury of small fa
tigues and simulated pains, unless indeed
they intend to take a year or two’s vaca
tion, ami have time gradually* to wake lip
to the required |M>iut of endurance. Some?
times the economical instinct comes into
play, and “roughing it’’ is undertaken os
tensibly* for pleasure, actually to save ex
penses, which is a great desideratum in
the vocation of many of our worn-out
and fatigued clerks, salenien and yoiin,
professionals.
There is no doubt, lint what more real
pleasure and recti|vmtion can lv got out
of a month’s marvNitiing than double the
time s|vnt at any seaside or mountain
view, when; idleness and lassitude are
the prime movers in the (veupatiou of
one’s own life.
A Runaway.
Yesterday afternoon atsiut *2^ oclock,

loose from bis fastenings, ami made a

A NEW KIND OF WATCH CASE.
New liecause it is ouly within the last few years tha
it has been improved and brought within the reach
of every one; old iu principle because the first in
vention was made and the first patent taken out
nearly twenty years ago, and cases made at that time
and worn ever since, are nearly as good as now.—
Bead tho following, which is only one case of many
hundreds; your Jeweler can tell of similar ones:
Manspikld, Pa , May 25,1873.
I have a customer who has carried one of Boss'
I*atent Cases fifteen years and I knew it two years
before he got it, and it now appeals good for ten
years longer. K. K OLNKY, Jeweler.
Remember Jas. Boss* Is the only Patent Case made
or two plates of solid gold (one outside and one In-
side) covering every part exposed to wear or sight,
the great advantage of these solid plates over elec-
tro-gikliug is apparent to everyone. Boss’ Is the
only Patent Crse with which there is given a writ
ten warraut, of which the following is a fac similie
