Governor Colquitt’s opposers claim
to make a square out, manly tight

use instead of reason, argument or

We publish elsewhere nil official
report ol’tlie Convention of the Dent-

which was held at the Courthouse on
Thursday.
Seldom have we ever witnessed
snob a large and enthusiastic gatlier-
ing of the Democrats of this county,
and tlie interest earli and every one
manifested in the deliberations of the
Convention was remarkable.
Judge I). H. Pope, who isanli-Ool-

ineeling, on motion of W. T. Jones,
Esq., a Colquitt man, and that too
without a dissenting voice. Jmlge
Pope presided witli ease, dignity and
entire impartiality.
(HXliltKSSlOX.U-
The first speaker was Captain John
A. Davis, who stated that he believed
the people of tlie county were desi
rous of srndiiig a delegation to tlie
Congressional Convention, favorable
to tlie nomination of Hon. Win. K.
Smith, and lie hoped tlie Convention
would first proceed to tlie election of
those delegates. Lorn! applause
greeted the announcement of Capt.
Smith's name.
Mr. J. W. Wallers moved tlAl all

The Chairman then ordered (hat
ballots l>e prepared, and after several
nominations tin* votes were placed in
a hat; and the following delegate
elected: L. P. 1>. Warren, Frank V.
Evans, Jas. L. Dozier, Henry Mor

FOB HON. w. K. SMITH,
Judge D. A. Vasnn then arose, and
in a few well-timed and appropriate
remarks, in support of Capt. Smith,
presented tlie preamble and resolu
tion. which arc published in the of
ficial report.
These were adopted amid vocifer
ous and enthusiastic applause, anil it
was plainly evident that Capt. Smith
was tlie choice of tlie people of Dough
erty.
NOTICE FROM REPUBLICANS.
Col. Tift here arose and stated that
there was in the hands of a gentle
man in tltis meeting a proposition
from tlie Republicans of tlie comity,
which was of much importance,
touching tlie matter of electing rep
resentatives in. tlie l
illation for these offices until Septem

Judge AY. T. Jones then arose, ami
read the following:

his aniinniieeinent was received

Mr. J. D. Chevc* then arose and
placed in iioniinnlioii the following
ticket: For Delegates to Uiibcrnnlo-

Mr. Jones, n Colquitt man, added:

Mr. Jesse W. Wallers arose anil
stated that lie had been requested to
ask Hie gentlemen who composed tlie
Colquitt ticket if it was their purpose
to go to Atlanta and nominate n can
didate for Governor, or did they in
tend, if they failed to secure Colquitt,
to break up tlie Convention and dis
organize the party ?
W. T. Jones, Ksq., stated his name
was on tlie Colquitt ticket ami lie was
ready to make answer to the question,
lie said Hint the names which com
posed that tirket were as good Demo

that eaeli ami every one of them lind
labored for years for the success of
organized Democracy; that they
would always do "so, and that they
would support tlie nominee of tlie
party, mi matter who they might lie.
[Isind applause.] Mr. Jones said,
also, Hint lie and Hie people of Dotiglt-

In the extreme back part of tlie

attempted to make some remarks,

the reason that lie did not belong to
the Democratic party. [Cries of “Let

Judge Pope stated that he had no ob

stated that lie merely desired to rise
