That all Is tranquil rest.
That for one day the lar and grate »
Of noisy industry,
Are sudden hushed, the air transformed
Into unrippled sea.
A holy calm encircles all,
E’en Mature seems asleep;
How sweet to be with Nature turned,
Accord with Nature keep!
How sweet to listen to the bells,
That call us to the pews!
How sweet Co turn once more in bed
And take another snooze.

BIS BEXARKABLE PERFORMANCES UN
DER WATER.
London Times.J
Hr. Flonaxmade his first appear
ance at thcBloyal Aquarium, West
minster, last night, in the large tank
bniltithr the whale and used by the
seals. HU remarkable performances
under water was better seen than it
has been elsewhere either during the
few mouths of the exhibition of; his
apparatus at the Polytechnic or at
Brighton. He can stay under water
for (ire hours without an air-tohe or
any other communication with the
surface, and the absence of incum
brance gives him much greater free
dom than any other divers possess.—
He call, for instance, lie down and
bend his body in aiiy position with
out fear of being lifted or floated up,
and without suffering from the ob
struction of the long pipe which usu
ally connects the bead of a diver with
a boat above. In short, he possesses
the principal advantage which dis
tinguishes an animal from a plant;
he moves independently instead of
being rooted to one spot. Foreshad
owed in the water, he presents a ca
rious appearance, with great goggle
eyes in his bnrnished helmet, a strong
water-tight dress ami water-boots.
The spectators amuse themselves
by throwing pence for him to pick
up, or by writing messages to him on
card-board, always under water. He
sharpens his pencil under water,
gives and receives signals with a cord,
and is to experiment on the subma
rine use of t*«e telephone. At Rjrde
he walked for a quarter of a mile un
der the sea; at Brighton he went
down in five fathoms by the chain
pier in rongh weather. If he coaid
eat under water, Hr. FIpuss says he
could stay for a longer period thau
five hours, which he gives as an ordi
nary limit. Yesterday afternoon he
remained two hours and seven min
utes under water in the Aquarium,
and again went down for half hour
in the evening. In a short lecture on
his apparatus which Mr. Fleuss gave
in the evening immediately on re
turning to the upper air, he stated
that bis method is no secret, that it is
patented, and that the specifications
are accordingly published. In,every
draught of breath we draw we feke
ip, a. certain, amount of oxygen, with
floor times as mnch nitrogen.. A lit-
lic.of the nitrogen becomes, fixed in
thp. form of carbonic acid, and the
urtjhux deteriorated becomes unfit
to breathe. If, however, the place of
the missing oxygen is taken by a
fresh supply, the mixture becomes
again fit for breathing. According
to Mr. Fleuss, he takes down com
pressed oxygen to snpply the place
of that which is breathed, in other
words, be has invented a set of anti-
longs, which perform a function pre
cisely the reverse of that or the lungs
proper.
This was confessedly a rough, pop
ular, hasty and generalized explana-.
tion. A more scientific account rimy
be expected from the lecture
subject which Dr. B. W. I
F. B. who is specially q.
the investigation by his tyeU-knowu
experiments on ozone, ig to deli ver at
the Society of Arts. It will be re
membered that it WA» to the same So
ciety that Professor Tyndall explain
ed the firemen’s respirator, which
has since proved in practice so valua
ble an instrnmentin straining the bad
*jr at firps before it reaches the lungs,
aM so enabling the Women i*
breathe what air is left among smoke
and noxious vapors. Mr. Fangs’
method is still more effectual, because
he ..?£ Ie » hi *own supply of oxygen
with him in a compressed form and
has thus been enabled to breathe In
an atmosphere In whit** there is no
appreciable quantity of ajr at ail.—
He states that he faw. gone through
fire-damp (carburetfed, hydrogen)
and choke-damp (carbonic acid) and
could exist in the charged receiver of
a gas factory.. In, the great helmet
and in thobpllows.of bis armor there

and tbb b kept fresh Sua Constantly
renewed by a stream of oxygeD, the
pressure of which he regulates by i
tap at will. To refresh himself ho in
creases the flow of oxygen, and when
he reqnires a stimulus diminishes it
Mr. Fleuss is a young and vigorous
man, who has served in the steam
boats of the Peninsular and-.Oriental
Company, liw apparatus is certain
ly very ingenious and effective, and
well worthy of attention.
