BRUNSWICK HARBOR.
During the last fiscal year the.plan
of improvement by means of a low
erfe jetty, slas ting from the most eas
terly point of Buzzard’s Island, was
begun, accompanied by dredging in
the channel to be improved, under
the first appropriation made for the
work, made in act of March3,1879.—
That anm was 990,000. The act of
Jane 4,1880, made a farther appro
priation of 910^000 The object of the
dredging is to establish, and by the
jetties to maintain, a channel fifteen
feet deep at low water through a
shoal located where the width of the
stream is excessive, about one mile
below the town of Brunswick, where
there was before less than ten feet at
mean low tide. Daring the late fis
cal year the progress made was small
the work on' (be jetty comprising the
construction of only six or seven
cribs and about twenty grillages for
the cribs to rest on, all *in readiness
to be pat in place. Only 1^49 cubic
yards of msuxtoflwere removed by
the dredge.’ The bottom was found
to be very hard and tenacious and
its removal slow and expensive. The
total amount expended to Jane 30,
188% is 9,591,46. During .the present
fiscal year It is proposed to continnc
the dredging and the work on the jet
ty under the existing contracts and
