Lints by Bishop Ihbcr at a Funeral. Beneath our feet an 1 o'er our head, Is equal warning given ; Beneath us 1 e the countless <icai), Above us is the heaven ! a heir names are graved on the stone, Their bones are in the clay ; And ere another day is done, Ourselves may he as they. tleath rides on every passing breeze. He lurks iu every flower ; li^eh season has its own disease, Its peril every hour ! Our eyes have seen the rosy liglA Of youth’s soft cheek decay, Aad fate descend in sudden night On manhood’s middle day •Our eyes have seen the steps of age Halt feebly t’wards the tomb. And yet shall earth our hearts engage, And dreams of days to come 1 Turn mortal, turn ! thy danger know ; Where'er thy foot can tread, The earth rings hollow from below, j. And warns thee of her dead Turn Cktistinn, turn ! th\ soul apply To truths divinely given ; The hones that underneath thee l;a Shall lire foe lied or Ilcaven 1 — FROM ItlE CHARLESTON COURIER. THE BLIGHTED ROSE. There bloom’d a Rose on yonder stent, Belov’d in ^maty’s hour; end evening dew drops form’d the gem, To grace that lovely flower. All lovely was that flow’ret’s hug In .Summer's cheerful ray— But Wintry blasts and chilling dew Soon drove its sweets away. But let that Rose its fragrance keep Amidst the storms of air; The heart of man would never weep- To find 'ts brautii s bare. E^ut who will love its blighted form.. And raise its drooping head, Or kiss the rose that’s felt the Storm, When every sweet has fled. —&©©— The Navy.— r liere is uo grade in our Afcvy higher thanihat of a Post Captain. A Post Captain, ranks with a Col. in 1 lie army, and that is as high as a naval man possibly can go. We have board just such ..complain s hofore, but have never met with any answer to them. During the late war there were many as professions as processions in favor of the navy—all ac knowledged that the navy deserved to the full as well as the army, we will not say better, f v ,r it is unnecessary to present sub ject, and now whv is not the navy treated Os well as the army is. The stars that the navy contrhuted so much to burnish and brighten, shine on eppaulcts of Brigadier ^nd M tjor Generals, hut a veteran of the ore tt, true fasten his huhion on a plain ■Strap. The Board of Naval commission er -• may be considered a kind of promo tion—be, the pay barely meet their ne cessary expenses, and it ird and severe at tention to 'heir very responsible duties, without any llong to stir the spirit or ex cite ihe cliiv dry of a naval man, is their dull and monotonous duty on shore. Our navv is constantly increasing, our men and officers are at least as good, as can be ,'ound in tbeinvy ofanv country, our ships die as well built, as well equipped, and in all points as serviceable as any that float. Ami nmv suppose it should be necessary 5bat a fleet of our vessels should corpo rate with that of any—the smallest mari time power in Europe, that the Admiral who hoists Ids flag over the stern of a pet- liuuger, would ou; rntk 'lie commander of a dozen ships like the N"rth Carolina, for he is but a Post Captain- To be short, policy, gratitude and good sense require higher grades in the navy. Policy re quires llicm for the country, and good souse for those reasons which will com- me id themselves to every thinking indi vidual in the country. Conn. Mirror. Humboldt's Travels. Thomas Fuller, the historian and di vine, was a man of learning and industry, but his sivle is quaint and full of antithe ses and points. Dr. Fuller was a very corpu lent man, and as lie was <>»e day riding with a gentleman by the name of Sparrow - hawk, he could nut resist the opportuni ty «.f playing off a joke. “ What is the difference, said he—between an owl and , a SpanowkawlcV’ It is,—answered his ! companion,—-fuller in the bead, fuller in the body, and fuller all over.” The book of all books is vour own j heart, in which ate written and engraven ; the deepest lessons of divine instruction : 1 learn therefore to be deeply attentive to ■ the presence of God in your hearts, who j is always speaking, always instructing, al- i ways illuminating that heart that is atten tive to him.—[Laic.~\ CITY HOTEL.
