delens trahit. To the limb thus confined its unnatural position was a stimulus and determined sensorial power into it instead of the other. Fever sometimes cures Palsv. Why 1 Because excitement is abstracted from the paralytic limb and in- salatcd in the blood vessels in Fever. 1 bus the overstimulation of the paralytic limb is removed, and it recovers its energies. A much safer practice than using either external or internal stimulants in Palsy, would be to bleed and purge. If effusion is the cause of 'he pressure, the absorbent system is thus made to work more power ful! v, than by the application of those remedies, which excite the whole system, bloiid vessels as well as absorbents. If the absorbents did not actually increase their action, the blood vessels being less excited after bleeding, the absorbent ac tion would bear a greater ratio to the crhalcnt than it did before, and thus the cause of the effusion would not only be lessened, but the effect removed. This is the way bleeding operates in dropsies of increased action. But the absorbent system does not always lessen its activity, because the lessened activity of other systems ex ists. On ihe contrary, the absorbents act with increased energy, when the stomach and bowels are emptied, as if they were impressed with the necessity of increased exertion to obtain the necessary supply of nourishment from the diminished mass.— It seems to be a translation of excitement, regulated by a law of our nature. When the arteriai system is in preponderating action, having more than its due propor tion of excitement, the other systems seem to be in a state of minus excitement, and At an Election on Satur- turday evening last, Mr. Chakles A. This is seen in 1 ises himself the pleasure of giving. dropsies in the increased energy of the exhalent system pouring out its fluids fas ter than the absorbents can remove them. That electricity is calculated to have the bad effects, which these considerations should render probable, there would be no difficulty in demonstrating by a refer ence to a different practice, bottomed on the belief that paralytic limbs (or half the body) are always too much excited alrea dy, and therefore our local applications ounht to be such as are calclated to lessen :he action of lhe part, as ihe general reme dies should lessen the activity of the whole system, thus striking doubly at the cause tud effect both by the same remedies, in stead of being involved in the inconsisten cy of stimulating local remedies, and de pleting general one*. Things 1 assure you are very dall, fair Bowe s will not bring over ® a 6;} for something near good fair. It is now evident that the manufac turers will not overstock or even stoekthemselves with the article at these prices, and the fate of the market, for the balance oftheyear, I think de pends upon the management of Messrs. , w ho 'ire the greatest holders. Thus far they have been tirm, if they continue so prices w ill i.kelv Ik sup ported, but should they give way and put their stocks in the market, a deelinc of Ad. is inevita ble. The consumption is as large as was everknown; -he demand for goods at Manchester is fair and steady, and money is plenty at 3 per ct. yet an advance is nut anticipated, and the geneial im pression appears to be that thing will remain pretty much as they now are. Nov. 5 52 2t The Advertisement in the last Courier addressed “To the Public” and signed “R. B. Haviland &. Co,” Contains a disingenuous mis-statement with re gard to ourselves which entitles it tosome notice. The declaration—“we received for answer that they [the names of the persons injured) could not be given us,” is untrue. We gave no such answer. When one of the gentlemen eomposing the firm of Messrs. R. B. Haviland &. Co called upon us on Wednesday morning, we informed him —as we had previously another person—that the names were given to us confidentially, and that we believed a proper sense of delicacy on the part of the individuals themselves, wouldpre- vent their going farther ; but that, as this was founded on supposition onlv, we would make en quiries upon that point, and let him know the re sult. On the succeedingevening we informed him | owing to the absence of one of the gentle- inen coneerued, we were stiil unable to give him i a positive answer, but would do so if possible ] next day—and, but for the appearance of the publication in question, should then have told him —what we had anticipated, and what he might very reasonably have expected—that ihe gentle men who had taken the medicine, would not permit their names to be given up—for what re spectable man with the least sense of delicacy, w’ould think of formally making it known to an in- dividualwith whom he was personally unacquain ted, that he was laboring under all that degrading intemperance, weaknes of mind, and want of firmness and resolution which alone could induce a man to fake the medicine of Dr. Chambers. So much for ourselves—which had Messrs. R. B. Haviland Co. really felt that “ duty to them selves and to” us among “ their fellow-citizens” which they have thought proper to boast of, and also that regard for truth which they have unjus tifiably questioned in others, we should have been spared the unpleasant necessity of making this explanation—And so far as the public is concern ed, we are authorised to say, that the gentleman who suffered most-severely from the effect* of Dr. Chambers’ medicine, took a smaller portion of it than what is prescribed in the nrinteH Hirertinn In the Superior Court, Scriven County. October Term,1827. Present the Honorable William Schley, Judge. U PON the petition of James B. Lewis, stating the loss of a certain instrument in writing, commonly called an order, drawn by Samuel S. Bryan in favor of Green D.
