of Scissors, bot wall?. taign*"' •* we may consider them, in the ian s o Master Hankes they perform "°™ers. He will present you an exact pr» e 1 e_ ness, in as short a time as you have been reading to this period. There ,s scarcely .„iy object, of which his Gallery does not present von a specimen; and not the ,i£ple object only, but combinations of pictures, whose relations to one another, Ld whose graceful outlines fall little short of the operations of the pencil. \Ve can not pretend to describe them. No ade quate idea can be formed of the perfec ts n to which he has curried this unique ;j , f ) without visiting the scene of its ope rations. Here you have carriages and horses, Grecian boxers, hunters with then- dogs and guns ladies with their guitars and harps, the boy with his top, the sage with his book, the peaceful landscape, the deso lations of war, the delicate shrub, the lofty tree, the lowly cottage, the gothic tower ; in short, what has not Master Hs’ Scissors here brought into a pleas ing existence? When boys, we used to read of the Scissors of the three fatal Sis ters, which were wont to clip the weak thread of human existence ; they were not to be compared to the Papyrolomic Scissors of Master Hankes, which have brought more beings into existence, than all the scissors of the world have yet sent out of it. We sat to Master Hankes for the iitie- ness of our honorable selves which he despatched so suddenly', that we were dis posed to think he was not aware of our importance. Some of our friends think it does not resemble our usual facial ro tundity ; but is more like the elongated phi* which we wore for a short time after tiie New-York election, and the choice of Speaker in Congress. The editor of the Washington News, seems, had but one friend to call his at tention to tho Editorial labors of his breth ren. ’ We have the advantage of him ; for our city furnished us with two friends to point out to us, what had been borborig- marizing in the brain of John Kosciusko Menelaus Charlton. But we regret to say, not an individual, friend or foe, has been able to make us perceive the applicability of his remarks. Mr. Oliver, as requested by the News, has called at our office, and informed us that lie communicated the intelligence oi Indian Hostilities to its editor, and that he received it from gentlemen whose names he has leit with us. The new Speaker.—If any one most ’nave been chosen Speaker of the Home of Representatives, opposed to our princi ples, as to a liberal interpretation ot the Constitution, in respect to internal im provements and the general protection of domestic industry, there is no gentleman that we would have preferred to him on whom the choice has fallen, Mr. Steven son, of Virginia—a rigid and pnweiful adherent to the doctrines of the “Virgin ia School,” a* it is called—and, certainly, from a perfect conviction, in his own mind, that they are correct, and ought to be sup ported. But, though 1 igid as to these priu- ciples, he allows others to enjoy their’s— and, we have no doubt, will preside over the House in an able and honorable man ner, and afford as much general satisfac tion, perhaps, as could be Imped tor, in this period of ardent political discussion. He is a gentleman of line manners, and amiable deportment—easy of access, and friendly, ills place is one of great respon sibility—increased by the ability with which it has been heretofore filled. f \iks Register. Dec. 20 R The opposition bo.-sr ■. majo ity in both Houses of Congress : let us see what use they will makeof it. Surely they will not pass the woollens bill; for if ihev do, what will their party in the South think of it? And if they do not pass i>, what will the honest Dutchmen of Pennsylva nia sav? Upon the shoulders of the tip- position, and not ot the administration, will rest the responsibility which will at tach in the case either of the passage or rejection of this bill. \V e hope, too, that uow the opposition have the ball at their , own feet, they will not fail to give us back : the West-India trade, which they say the administration has lost us. Let us see whether they will repeal the restrictive acts of Congress, and throw our ports open lor a twelve month to the tree in gress of British colonial navigation, by way of invitation to Great Britain to do the same ; or respond to the noble senti ment of the President in his recent mes sage, that “ it becomes not the self respect <of the United States, either to solicit gra tuitous favor, or to accept as the grant of a favor that for which an ample equivalent is exacted."—Norfolk Herald.
