Steam Boats.—We have long since
been aware, that a boat intended to be
propelled by steam on llie Savannah Riv

necessary support, the project being con

views of Mr. Longstreef, which were

YVc do it reluctantly, hut think we owe it to the
use of truth, to state, at the request of Dr. M'-
W'horter, what passed between tiie Editor of the
hronicle and him on the 22d lust. We wish to
ke no part in such a controversy, but stale the

Ihii k it enough to say. that the statement given
Dir" M'Whortcr in ttie Georgia Courier of
May 1st, tube generally correct, and where there
any variance in our reco lections, it is in re
nal to unimportant particulars, which do not
Iter the general truth of the statement. For in-
tanre, when Dr. M’Whortcr and the Editor of
Chronicle, parted from immediate contact,
>r. M’Whorter says, that from his running with
s head below bis shoulders, he thought Mr. Pein-
rtou must have expected to be struck over the
head with the heavy part of the sword stick left
under bis arm It was the impression of one ol
, (Mr. J. P. Force) who was close to the cora-
tants. dial Dr. M’Whortcr had chastised him as
uuch as be intended, and had then thrust him
uni him iu contempt. We saw no blows given
0 Dr. M’Whortcr by Mr. Pemberton, but did see
he latter receive repeated lashes from the tur
ner with his w hip. Mr. Force thinks from 20 to
10—Mi. Sandwich about 20, mid Mr. 'lhorpe

From Lieut. Smith’scertificate, attached to Mr

that some misundeistanding existed between the

in which Dr. M’Whoiterwas called on for his
second n.-te. Lieut. Smith calle uii me. and, at
1 understood him, desirvd me to obtain from the
Doctor, for hit own private satisfaction, a written
tatv iaeut of his reasons for not considering Mr.
Pemberton entitled to a certain sort of notice.—
did obtain, in pursuance of this request, the
note before referred to In obtaining it, I stated
expressly to the Doctor, that it was for Lieut.

sured me that he gave it for no other purpose.—

1 lie demand for Cotton Manufactures is con
tinued with considerable briskness, and general
ly, we believe, at prices which leave more or less
of profit, and there is also a very good demand
for Colton Y'arns, so trial altogether we consider
the consumption ofCotton in this count y to be
quite as much, and probably a litile more than
it was iu the last year. Our future prices, as
before noticeJ, will very much depend upon,
and be regulated by the extent of the imports,
and principally on those from the United States
It should be borne in mind, that the stocks at the
commencement of this year exceeded by 120,000
bags what they were on the average at the com
mencement of the three preceding; that there is
in this country a pr- veiling opinion, that the cul
ture of Cotton is still on t'ne increase in the whole
of the United States; aud that whilst it is so, low
as the prices may be th.iught to be, they will be
considered as paying the planter a fair remune
ration for his capital and charges of produc
lion. In favor of higher prices there are the
chances of partial failures in the gioivth, and tiie
possibility thattbe low prices at the portsofship-
uient may induce the planters to lessen the pro
duction. The consumption of Cotton Manufac
tures in the whole of Europe is pruhably a little
on the increase, and a continuation of prices simi
lar to those late current, will, we think, at no ve
ry remote period, cause the consumption of East
ludia Cottonsin Europe to be altogether discon
tinued. We are still of the opinion, that should
the imports from the United States this year to
this country not exceed 500,000 bags, the prices
will be a little higher, and that should they a-
inout to 550,000 there will be no good grounds
for an advance, unless it shall be believed that
the pioduce of the next crop will be greatly dimi
nished

Havkf., March 6.
The brig Lancier, which left Alexandria (E-
gypt) on the 17th Jan. la-t, in company with a
convoy, with 12,150 bales of Cotton, has arrived
at Marseilles, a d brings the news that ten ves
sels more would sail foi the same port in a few
days afterwards. The arrival of so much Cotton
at Marseilles will, of course affect • ur market,
arid 1 am beginning to be of the opinion that we
will have Cotton heie next year, as low ns 11
sous for good Uplands, and 16 sous for Louisana.
i Ii urn be raised in tne United States, there is no
doubt, at 6 a 6^ cents, and unless they sell it there
at about that, two years hence Egypt and Brazil
will have the whole of the trade.
