HOWTO PREACH.
“ I thiiik truly,** sRy| Dr. Owen, “that

and digest, and thrive by what he prepares
for his people, he may give them poison
as far as he knows ; for unless he finds
the power of it in his own heart, he can*
not have any ground of confidence, ihat it
will have power in the hearts of others.
It is an easier thing to bring our heads
to preach thau our hearts to preach. To

Punctuality among mechanics, is a great
desideratum. Show us a mechanic who
will get our work done by the time speci
fied, and we will cherish him as the apple
ol cm eye. But lo the mechanic, who
makes us call twice, (fire and sickness
exceptedJ we bid Farewell—“ a long fare
well”—lie is not the man for our monev.
The mechanic gains nothing by false pro
mises except a bad name. In order to
grasp at all the work iu tho neighborhood
manv a piechanic will promise, when he
knows it is not in his power toperform.—
What is Nuch a man but a liar ? To say
nothing t,f the vice of lying, than which
there is nothing more low and contempt!
ble, the mechanic, in the eud, gets far less
work by false promises, than he would
by a strict adherence to the truth. l*unc•

nesi,, ibe foundation of prosperity, and

(STUDY INDISPENSABLE TO liUu VTNESS.
It is a fact, says a writer iu the Episco
pal Watchman, well worthy the attention
of young men, who have the misfortune to
<:<>tisi<lei themselves as great gtniuscs,
Vhnt nearly all the master spirits of the
British parliament have been distinguish
ed as sclnlais, before they became emi
nent as statesmen. If Sheridan is urged
as an exception, let it be remarked, that
only one Sheridan has ever been heard on
1 the floor of St. Stephens; and that the
-splendid and terrible assailant of Warren
.Hastings, sunk at last into a mere writer
of comedies, and manager of a play
house. Chatham, and Piit, and Fox, and
Burke,and Canning, and Brougham, with
.many others, whose names shiue with
lustre only a iitlle inferior to those above
mentioned, were distinguished for their
-classical attainments. Tliev laid the
foundation of their future greatness in the
cloisters ol the university. Since the
world began, genius has accomplished
nothing without industry ; and no error
can be more fatal to the youg aspirant
after distinction and usefuluess, thau that
indolent self-complacency which rests
on the supposed possession of exalted ge-
uius.
•A characteristic touch.—Two coal
heavers mice viewing Saiut Paul’s cathe
dral, one exclaimed, “ My eyes, Jack,
wba; a sight of coals it would bold !”
Beginning of the World.—There is
nothing that distracts the slumbers of
young inou so much as setting up in busi
ness. Beginning the world brings w ith it
many serious thoughts. The hope of suc
cess, the fear of disaster, the ligaments of
tenderness, the feeling of rivalry, all work
deeply upon tho youthful mind, anti ren
der its uiglits restless and uueasv. There
are some tempers however, that are eter
nally delighted with what may be called
beginning tbe >vorld. 1 knew a man who
began life a half a dozen times ip the
course of a few years, aud each time w ith
a different set of rules. He had been ev
ery thing for a time, but nothing long. In
consequence he was a poor devil, and will
verv likely die a poor devil.
There is much truth, and some point
in the above little sketch. Beginning the
world, choosing a profession* and choos
ing a wife, are three tilings connected
with life, of modi difficulty and of more
importance. Young men seldom give
eitlier of them that deliberation which is
their due. Tbe happiness of this world
and the hopes of futurity, are connected
with their decisions, whilst prosperity aud
reputation, or adversity and infamy are
their attendant consequences. As far as
regai ds a profession, a man should never
be too liasty in his determination. Almost
every individual of the human family has
by nature a particular talent, which, when
brought into requisition aud applied to
some exclusive object, cannot fail to be
attended with commensurate success.—
But the man who vaiuly concievos that
lie cau succeed in any tiling, seldom be
comes eminent iuatix. It is.absurd pol
icy to commence a dozen projects togeth
er, or even to commence a second before
the first has been rendered pemaueiitly
successful. Franklin particularly endeav
ored to convince young persons of tbe ne
cessity of forethought, integrity and fru
gality in the early career of business. I
was never discouraged, says he, by the
