[ rram the National Intelligencer, May 3 ]
DIED,, in this city, at a quarter before six o'
clock last evening, the Honorable THOMAS
I'UDOR TI CKER, Treasurer of the Coifed
States, io tne 81th year of his age. He had been
confined to his bed, by the malady which termi
nated his life, for thirteen weeks, and died in the
enfne possession of his faculties, and in the
most resigned and pious frame of mind.
Of this venerable and most estimable man, it is
not our purpose now to pourtrny tho character,
further than to say, that he was a patriot of the
purest character, tested in the ordeal of the Re
volution, and approved in the political trials,
which followed d. He wax a Representative'
from the State of South Carolina, in the first |
Congress f the United States, and for some time |
afterwards, deservedly enjoying the respect of
those with whom he was associated in the impor
tant duty of putting this Government into opera
tion. He had, for many years previous to his
decease, filled with fidelity the duties of the office
which he held at the time of his death; and, in
his public as well ns private life, was the model of
a gentleman, and an example to all around him.

COMMERCIAL.'
AUGUSTA, 12ih May, 1828.
The perusal. of -the re-
U*©\ publications, and ihe remarks in
the ^* Savannah Georgian’' of the 6lh instant, re
lative to the facilities of that, port, for furnishing
water for the Navy and Commercial' Ship
ping, for ship use at sea,- puts jne in 'mind of
pointing out, through the “ advertising columns of
the Georgia Courier,” another of the natural ad
vantages of Brunswick, to wit:
When my contemplated Steam-boat Canal is
opened from the Alatamaha, twelve miles,- to
I urtle river, which will terminate seven miles a-
liove Brunswick, as must be the case ere long.it
will be fed, or rather filled, from the west side of !
the Alatamaha, about eighteen miles, by the
meanders, above Darien and thirty-five from
the mouth, at which place (Clark’s Bluff) it is ,
never affected so high up, with salt, or even
brackish water, from the tides; consequently,^
from the foot or south end of the Canal, tanks i
or watering boats, constructed for the purpose, j
can furnish, the shipping in the harbour, in four
hours, with an inexhaustible abundance of the ;
finest fresh water for ship use at sea.'
It will be acknowledged on all hands, that the
waters w'ich flow through the vast fertile inte
rior and heart of Georgia, by way of the Oak-'
mulgee, Oconee and Alatamaha," are as pure,
soh and healthy for the use of shipping at sea,
as can be obtained from any of the rivers in the
Southern or middle States.
Should other doubts exist in regard to any of
the minor natural advantages of Brunswick, it
will always afford me equal pleasure to remove
them ; but, in pointing out the above, to which I
have been prompted, I hereby disclaim the remo
test intention or wish, were it in mv power, of
forestalling Congress on the important subject of
selecting a port for a Naval Depot in the South.
W- B. DAVIS
N. B.—My GREAT SIN being that of a public
advocate of Brunswick and the general commer
cial and agricu tural welfare of Georgia, which,
at the same time, would also go to promote the
highest interest of Charleston, and put down the
aristocracy and sectional corruption of Savan
nah, it seems that the latter would wage the war
of extermination against my rights to “ the adver
tising columns of the Georgia Courier.”
COTTON.—Liverpool dates to the 2Gth March,

daring thisweek. andfrom 2500 to 3000 hnles has
fhanved hands at from 9 j to 10^ cents. Good to
prime has been most .sought after, w hile the low-
-qualities have been rather neglected. Sales
mostly at 9 5-8 a lO.j 'I he accounts per Hnmil-

more fit in ; arid an advance in a few instances of
I of a ceni has been obtained, though there has
ticca but little done since their receipt. There
has her n but little doing in Sea Islands during
the piesent week, the lower qualities having
been previously bought up ; the remaining part
vf the crop on hand is held at from 24 to 30 cents,
and for some upwards; for which there is but
little demand at present. The business, gener
al)', during t|te week has been pretty fair.

Nkw Onr.F.ANS, April 20.
Cotton.—There has been a brisk demand for
all descriptions, except the best quality of Louis
iana and Mississippi, and the sales more exten
sive since onrlnst than for the same time during
the season, leaving but little in first hands for dis
posal. Of the present stock on hand, not clear
ed. there is a large proportion sold, weighed and
marked and on ship hoard. We have advanced

quarter of a cent per pound.
