COMMERCIAL.
The proceedings of the House, on Sat
urday, as will be seen by the sketch in
this morning’s paper, far exceed in tumult
and disorder, any that has ever yet occur
red in that body. Russel Jarvis’business
has had the go-by, until the next meeting
of Congress.
Mr. Barney was very much in error
when he said, they would return to their
homes, with all “ their country’s wishes
blest.” The people we think, will tell
their representatives differently, at the
next election.
The Editor of the National Gazette, is
correct, when he says that—nine tenths of
a season of Congress are consumed in
drawling—the remainder resembles the
first race of school boys, who have loiter
ed at a distance until the bell has began to
toll.—[Alexandria Gaz.
A letter from Washington, to the Edi
tor of the N. Y Evening Post, says—
11 Mr. Robertson, of Kentucky, is to be
nominated Minister to Mexico, in place
of Mr. Poinsett, who will resign.”
Remarking upon the recent appoint
ment of a Minister to England, a corres
pondent in Baltimore makes the follow
ing very just observations: “This mark
of the President’s confidence is the more
deserved, and will Ho the mom apprecia
ted by his friends, as the support given by
Governor Barbour to bis administration,
has been unwavering and genuine, from
first to last. Living in affluence, yet lead
ing an active life ; enjoying the confidence
of bis stale, and filling tbe highest office
in its gift, few bad less temptation than
lie to encounter the sedentar labors of
a department, and the violence of unceas
ing opposition. The sphere to which he
has been translated, if more agreeable, is
also.more important, and must be viewed
as an appropriate theatre for his talents,
and a suitable tribute to his fidelity, not
merely to his Administration, but to the
cause ol the country in the worst, and in
all times.”—Nat. Int.

Fame.—What is that immortal fame, so
ardently desired, so perseveringiy pur
sued by the talented and the great ? Sim
ply preservation from oblivion of a few
letters of the alphabet put together in r
particular way ! As to the memory of Ju
lius Caesar’s actions, it is the same to him
as if he had been called John Smith.
Dry bones are marvellously indifferent to
applause or censure. Why then does na
ture pant for glory and renown "? The
savage and the sophist, the scholar and
the clodpole, alike are subject to such as
pirations. The savage must leave the
fame of a tried warrior on earth, ere he
can hunt the shadowy deer on the hill of
shadows; the civilized soldier must bathe
his name in blood, ere his spirit is cloth
ed with its immortal garb and honest
Hodges must break threads of half the
parish, in order that he may be remem
bered after death. Well did Burke ex
claim, “ What shadows we are, And what
